|I have an electronic three-phase converter on mine, so I can’t run
|it for more than 15 minutes, but I’ve never ever run it for a total
|of 15 minutes because it does everything I need it to do in about 30
|seconds.

We could probably build one at the Makerspace...

Floor sander/scrubber on a precision mounting with table?

I don't think it would be too difficult to build something like this with a standard 110 motor (or two) and some belts.

For $200, its easier to buy one designed for it rather than try to find:
18" flat steel plate mounted to a shaft and balanced.
Cast iron tilting table with adjustable spacing
Heavy base to hold it all together.

I'll throw in $50 if other people want to pitch in and someone goes and gets it.

The only problem is the cost of sand paper. Go through it quite fast  plus no one uses  them properly .

80 grit should last fairly long.  200-400 would clog fast.

I can throw in another $50, that gets us halfway there. Anyone else?

Set a favorite on ebay for 18" sanding discs. I use 80 grit 12" discs. Occasionally I find a good deal on ebay for discs. Even if I have a lot on hand I buy them if they are a bargain price. 80 grit works great for steel. 60 is OK but a bit harsh at first. OK once the disc wears down some. Sanding wood or aluminum fills in the disc and ruins it. Pine especially has sap and ruins a disc quickly. I have two 12" disc grinders. I use them a lot. They are very handy.

You can easily clean pine/wood tar and sap out of the disks with solvent.

Also still $50 shy on the cost of the sander.  Will swing by tonight to see if there are any detonators err donaters floating about.

And will be bearing some neat pneumatic cylinders.

I went to Burlington today and picked up the sander. We had to partly disassemble it to fit in the van.  I reassembled it and cleaned it up a little.  I mounted the motor with some vice grip clamps and fired it up.  It works great, however Rich or Brant or Tom GR or Ron should take a look a it before it goes into general use.

We are going to leave it alone.  I thought you were going to use a floor buffer on your project.

Kevin Crowley

Floorbuffer was a suggested alternative for building a sander. It already has many of the parts that would be needed.  Trueing it up just means the edge of the table is parallel to the face of the sander and the fence would be a clamped on fixture.

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, a couple more pics:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/24308938@N04/sets/72157632088756311/

It appears to be homemade, or at least heavily modified.

It needs a new power cord, and maybe a larger motor. The spindle has a
3-belt pulley, and the motor only has a 1-belt pulley. Also, there isn't
enough tension on the belt.

It also needs a dust collection port. I wouldn't suggest using it in its
current state, but with a bit of work, it looks like it will be an
awesome tool :-).

Or something like "Milwaukee Makerspace has a huger sander than Adam Savage: CONFIRMED"

MMS has 54 more square inches of disk sander area: CONFIRMED

Adam Savage is gonna come check out MMS's bigger disk sander: PLAUSIBLE

Second proposal:

I realize it goes a bit against the trash talking tweets I posted very shortly ago, but what if we were to finnagle this into some type of Adam Savage, you should come out to milwaukee, check out our awesome disk sander, and bust a bunch of beer related myths in the heart of Milwaukee.  We'll help with the build, and you can help with the cameras.

Make it more of a "Adam, you should come check this out" instead of "Adam isn't as cool as MMS", because if I were him, I could see that as good a reason as any to come and do something in milwaukee.

Go team,

Matt
