Hi All,

As life gets in the way, Brant and I have been working on the furnace.  Its REAL close, in fact tomorrow (THURS) I am planning to do the first melt.

I have 100lbs of petrobond casting sand on order and am looking to see if anyone has any of the following items just layin around :)

+ Metal trashcan - This will be used to store the used petrobond for re-conditioning
+ Cement Mixer?  To build a muller for sand conditioning and for mixing resin bonded sand (when we get there)
+ large metal pail (3-4ft in diameter) or a metal coffin (cool) or some sort of metal/galvi horse trough watering container to hold regular sand and to hold the molds when we pour
+ access to free petrobond?
+ access to regular sand? (vs. purchasing) though I may just roll up to bradford beach and grab some there.

On thurs I am planning to pour Aluminum ingots, just to get the furnace tuned and develop a safety procedure, etc.

Thoughts, suggestions always welcome

Bret

I have a fairly well used one of theses:

Would it need to be dedicated to the sand or can it be used for other purposes when not casting?

substitute for pertobond I ran across...

Dan McGuire an art professor at UW-Whitewater created an additive that sped the drying process for creating molds.  I forget what it was called when marketed, but I can ask him when I see him next.

You can get arrested for grabbing sand off the beach, but I see it for
free on Craigslist all the time.

May want to contact the foundry teacher at MATC and see if they have any
extra sand that they can part with (and maybe he can suggest where you
might be able to find a muller for cheap).

I have seen talk of using regular sifted sandbox sand and motor oil
for casting sand, but that sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

hi,

no kitty litter please :)

@ david: Alternatives to petrobond are welcome, we just need to keep materials separate. the drier sound interesting, palease inquire as to what material you would use that for. resin bonded sand is where we want to go, and eventually. ceramic shell, baby steps first.

@kevin, absolutely. ill be there around 5:30-6 to assess

@tom, no need to dedicate, for mulling sands. would need to assess if we would use for a resin bonded sand mixer as residue would stick to the tines

with the petrobond, i willq be istructing how to make a 1-off out of of foam, and then casting on e foam. as we evolve the intest and skill sets, we will delve into bigger and better processes.

thanks forthe input.

btw, tonight will be casting ingots ifall goes as planned
@ jason: gracias

So, I work at a company that makes specialty sands used in castings. Mainly sands used in steel and iron foundries. So, I have access to Zircon, Chromite, anti-veining additives, and some mold coatings that protect against veining. But the problem is with all of these sands (not the mold coatings) is you need to have a resin system to form the mold and I don't have access to a lot of the resins. If you feel that you could use some of these sands feel free to contact me and I could bring some sands or coatings to the makerspace.

I can get 50# pails of Petrobond if you need some. About $65 per pail.

I haven't had time to pay attention to the casting activities, but I thought this was interesting.
