"It took Dr. Adam Blankespoor two years and $14,000 to convert his 1996 Honda Civic into an all-electric plug-in vehicle. He's an automotive engineer and researcher..."

Does that sound like way too much to spend? Ben, Tom, Rich, other guys... are you doing it much cheaper?

by the looks of the video thumbnail, it looks like he has fancy Lithium batteries, which may account for most of that cost....i could be wrong tho...

Price wise thats about right, cheap even with the Lithium batteries.

These are all new prices from a standard supplier, it looks like he bought the parts new so:

Warp9 motor  $1900
Warp Controller $2350
Charger      $1100
DC DC Converter  $300

   Total   $5650

That leaves $8350 for the batteries

100AH LiFe battereis are $138 each for 45 batteries thats  $6210

And that leaves about $2000 for wire, contactors, pot box, etc.

So his price is about right.

Now you can do an AC conversion with lead batteries like mine and get 50 miles range for about $9000 all new, or $3000 scrounged :-)

Ahh, interesting... I'd not seen actual numbers before, thanks Tom.

Also we need the word "SCROUNGE!" somewhere on the wall at Lenox in foot high letters.

I would not mind doing a motorcycle at some point, but the limited ability to fit batteries in there seems to limit the range.

I do have a lead on some lipo batterys. He would probbally donat them if we would put remy battery on the motorcycle and took it to the electric car expo. I talked to him few mins ago and i just need the website or info on that expo.

Does anybody have the info for the expo that is going on in 2013. I believe rich brought it up at the tuesday meeting some time ago. Maybe a website of some sort. I seem not to be able to find it.

The total budget on my electric Geo Metro conversion was $1300. That was with lots of scrounging, including used batteries.

The motorcycle was $2000 total, including new lead-acid batteries. It has a 25-30 range on those 4 lead batteries. That's plenty of miles if you are in the city. The bank, library, post office, grocery store, etc. are all within a ten-mile total round trip of my house.
