Wondering if you guys have thought about summertime security. I'm sure when it is warm and hot out you will tend to want to leave all the doors and garage door open for air circulation. With McDonald's next door and now located in a residential area you will have lots of foot traffic past all these open doors. The old space was very secluded.

I'm thinking we can make one of these. http://projectsentrygun.rudolphlabs.com/products/gladiator-ii-paintball-turret It'll shut off when it sees a particular color.

I *think* we have cameras on each entrance but not on the garage door. I believe a friendly audible announcement that people are being recorded could act as a strong deterrent,

I think Brand would agree with me... and what we really need is a sign.

Maybe a large diameter rope to hang across the garage door entrance and maybe the doors when they are open. Maybe a sign hanging on the rope in the middle. A very good deterrent.

If a thug wants to come in a nab something a camera is the last thing he would care about. I would suggest light sensors across the door with a bell or something so that when there isn't someone in that area but the door is open for venting, it at least announces someone had come in.

Or lasers. Lots of high-powered vaporize you on the spot lasers.

Another possibility could  be to buy a bolt of mosketoe netting and sew a curtain that could be hung from the open door to cover the doorway.  It would allow ventilation and  could have a split in the middle to allow people to get through, but visually it would obscure what is inside the building (at least during the day when it's brighter outside than in).

Maybe a metal scissor gate? I could not find any used ones on Craigs list. Are there other names for them?

Neither of those are big enough - our door is 10' wide.

I would also rather see something more inviting like a 4' fence across the door rather than a security gate.

Besides, if we start leaving the garage door open for ventilation we will also need to leave other doors open to get a cross flow.

No matter what we do or don't do we will need to be careful about not leaving small valuable things near open doors.

Suggestions:

If you need to leave a door open for ventilation, don't prop it all the way open (cut down in visibility)  2-3' up on the garage door and less than 1' on man doors.

Try not to leave the area near an open door unattended - close the door when you leave the area.

Keep your eyes open and talk to curious lookers.  It not only helps promote the space but any potential thief isn't going to like being noticed.

Tom

We might consider installing a ventilation fan in the east wall. At
Chase, we did get a strong cross-breeze by leaving the back door open.

The door at the southeast corner (currently blocked off) would be good
for cross-ventilation.

(BTW the louvers on the fan by the welding area still don't always
close, and even when they do there are big gaps between them. Not really
a problem in the summmer, but we should build some kind of
weatherstripped enclosure for the winter. It needs to be easily opened
and closed, because we do need ventilation in the winter.)

>No matter what we do or don't do we will need to be careful about not

That might not be possible-- the 'space is full of small valuable
things, especially on both sides of the garage door.

Some garage doors can be locked in a partially open position. It just
means cutting an extra hole in the track for the locking bar.

We should be doing this anyway. Interested people do drop in, and we
should welcome them. Of course, strangers often turn out to be members I
haven't met yet...

I think the steel scissors type would stretch to 10 feet. Or should be able to be modified to stretch to 10 feet.

How about that plastic snow fence material. It is maybe 4' high? Easy to attache to one end and have a simple hook something on the other end to attach it when the door is open. Make a cylindrical device with a coil spring inside and it rolls open like a venetian blind. Mount on the wall on the south side of the door. Easy as pie to grab and pull across and hook to the north side of the garage door opening. Just enough to keep most out.

Inexpensive and enough to do all the doors. In black would look better if it is available. Mount it 6" above the floor. Would be 4 1/2 feet tall. One can still look over the top. Or mount it one foot off the floor so one has to look thru it to see in.

Even with out the spring loaded device it is very easy to make one of these up, install it and use it. On the north side of the door use some extension springs so you have to stretch the springs some to attach it to the north side. Will always hold it taunt. Use some wood to make the sides. This idea is very easy to make and inexpensive. And easy to use.

that's close.  I thought of a giant curtain we could attach to the bottom of the overhead door, then raise it as the door was opened.  Maybe with some weights in the hem so it doesn't blow around too much.  It wouldn't prevent people from getting in, but it would define a border between public and private, and it would prevent passers by from eyeballing our equipment.

The steel security fence is ideal. Alternately we can always just build 5' wood frame sections with standard screen door material and hinges. The curtain idea is ok, but I think in practice it would be a little clunky and ineffective.

I was leaving late this afternoon and a homeless looking guy was walking past. I think you need to do something. How about used building supply places. Maybe one would have a nice used scissors gate on hand?

They will grab the welding helmets, grinders, etc.

Here is something south of Madison:

Two 5 foots sections for $100.

Hard to find on Craigs list.

This looks like a good deal. We should buy a couple of these.

Who can drive to Belleville with a suitable vehicle to pick them up?
(They wouldn't fit in my car)

By the way, we're in the process of installing a security camera aimed at the garage door from inside. The camera is already up but we have to pull some cable yet.

He says he does not go to Milwaukee or Waukesha for anything.  : (

He asks we pick them up. I'm in Racine.

I might consider it. Long drive. Or wait to see if we can find one locally? Anyone know of any used building supply places. Salvage? How do you search for them in Milwaukee/Racine?

I am of the opinion that the garage door should just stay shut unless someone is using it. The carpeted areas have air conditioning and there is a large vent up high in the shop area to help force out warm air. If it is still too hot, I would suggest portable fans before opening the door for ventilation since there aren't any openings on the other side of the building for cross ventilation.

There is a door at the southeast corner of the building, which is
currently blocked shut. It's not clear to me whether that's for code
reasons, or what.

If that door has to stay closed, I'd propose installing a ventilation
fan somewhere on the east wall (not necessarily right away, but we
should plan for it).

BTW another reason to leave the door shut (especially at night) is to
avoid letting critters in.

Ask me about the time I accidentally let a squirrel into the house...

Watching TV tonight I happened to catch a few minutes of Counting Cars. They showed the guy in his shop opening up the gate in a garage door opening. It is a 2 piece swing gate designed like a spider web. Maybe square tube as the outer frame and rebar to make the webbing.  This shows what it looks like. This may not be it but it is similar.  Maybe you guys could make your own gates? Swing open. Maybe a cool design inside the frame.
