I do not stop in much at the new space but when I do I see a fair amount of garbage lying around. I have tossed some of it in garbage cans at times. Many times the cans are quite full. Many times no can is in the general area so I just forget about it and leave the stuff lying around. So I had an idea. If one was to make a dedicated garbage cart on wheels one could easily  push it around and collect trash.

Here is one in Cudahy. I'm waiting to see if he still has it:

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/for/3686607603.html

One would bolt in a garbage can so it can never be taken off the cart. Also keep a supply of plastic bags on the cart. This way when someone is in the mood it is easy to grab the cart and push it around and collect trash.

I formally endorse this idea.

>Many times the cans are quite full.

That's because the dumpster is also full.

We've been waiting for things to settle down before deciding whether we
need to have the dumpster emptied more often.

The cart is not a bad idea, though. I'd suggest building one, but I have
too many other projects on progress right now.

I think we could mount a trash can on casters using what we have at the space, $0 out and we get to "make" something!

We're makers. If it only takes you five minutes to put wheels on a trash can, you're doing it wrong.

My opinion is if you guys have the actual real thing that some will actually be tempted to use it. Having a cart that is an actual janitors cart and looks the part will possibly entice some to actually use it instead of it getting lost somewhere and never getting used. You can keep some brooms and a dust pan on it etc. Small hand brush.

I'll buy it if he still has it and donate it. Would be nice to find a square garbage container to add to it. Maybe 50ish gallons? If not a round one would work.

I will admit that I will be far more likely to take the garbage out if some/all of our cans had wheels (permanent, that is).

I could even empty one, then take it around the space and empty all the little ones into it.

The cart is cool on it's own -stability, shelves for other cleaning stuff, etc.
If members wanna have some garbage cans w/ wheels, I still have some smaller furniture dollies at the space, in addition to a convertible dolly that has probably lost it's convertibility and would be just fine to have a barrel (or whatever) bungeed to it.

Maybe a consideration w/ the larger cans is that if they are too huge, they could easily become too heavy to tip into a dumpster.

$0 plus 5 minutes and as a bonus the old wire rack got disassembled.

The nice thing about a makerspace is everything you need is right there and ready to use.

I know one of the issues I am having is that there is no room in the trash bin outside. It's really difficult to complete the duty of taking out the trash when we have bags in the back ready to go in but no room to put them because that bin is FULL.
I peeked in it a bit and I am willing to bet most of that stuff is not Maker Space stuff. We need to either cage the outdoor bin and give a space key to the trash company or lock it and give the trash company either a key or the combination to the lock.

We can put the key/combination on a post on the wall leading to the dumpster so members who want to take trash out can without the fear of just having to bring all the bags back in due to a dumpster filled with non-maker stuff.

Ok. There is my two cents (tossing the pennies on the ground and waiting).

Maybe, but I think our trash looks a lot like other people's trash.

We should put a surveillance camera on it...

Since I'm the one who filled it I know that the vast majority is makerspace trash.

What is done with recycling?  I assume the soda cans are saved for aluminum casting, but I see a lot of cardboard too.  Do we have recycling pIck-up as well as having the bin emptied?  I plan to come for clean-up Tuesday, and I would be happy to separate out the recycling.

Aluminum cans are too thin to make good castings (too much oxidation),
anyone is free to take them in for recycling (whoever takes them gets
the money :-).

I don't think cardboard pizza boxes can be recycled (the grease
contaminates the mix). A lot of our trash seems to come from people
eating meals at the 'space, and we have a lot of members now.

I sent the guy an email but he never answered so I called him today. He had it but no one was interested in it so he gave it to a friend but he thinks the friend does not really have a use for it also. So he is going to ask his friend if he wants it and if not I can get it back and sell it to me. I'm sure for $30. Bargain!  Should be nice for you guys to have. I'm sure many will (maybe?) find the time and donate the effort to push it around and collect trash ocassionally. A job is always easier to do if you have a nice piece of equipment to work with.  :)

There is this one also but the guy says the wheels are (all?) bad. Plus the handle is missing to push it.

Right now trash collection is every other Tuesday and costs roughly $40/mo.
Adding recycling service was an additional $30/mo. when we received our quote in November and we decided against it at that time.  Anyone who would like to separate and take the cans and/or cardboard is welcome to it.
