Hello, Milwaukee MakerSpace.

As you may know, I'm working to bring Startup Weekend to Milwaukee. In working to organize this event, I'm trying to include all the significant organizations related to entrepreneurship in Milwaukee together into an organizing committee. Unfortunately -- and I really apologize -- I was unable to reach out to Milwaukee MakerSpace to ask for representation before our kick-off meeting occurred (it was just supposed to be a coffee meeting with two other people and it turned into a full-blow meeting, really!).

So, I'm sending this message to (1) share my first update message to the group, and (2) to ask if Milwaukee MakerSpace would like to be involved in organizing Startup Weekend Milwaukee. Obviously, there is probably a high correlation between those who are makers and those who aspire to be entrepreneurs. We hope you'll join us.

Please review the update below and visit the links in my signature for more information about me and Startup Weekend Milwaukee.

We look forward to your reply.

Hello, Startup Weekend Milwaukee Organizers!

The purpose of this message is to update everyone who I consider to be part of the Startup Weekend Milwaukee Organizing Committee. Here we go:
  • We currently have 72 people who've signed up to receive news about Startup Weekend Milwaukee at http://signup.startupweekendmilwaukee.org (i.e., our mail-list). That's a really good start, but I think we'll need to have about 400 people on our mail-list in order to get 100 people to signup for the actual event, maybe more.

  • We've had our first press coverage! See  http://www.jsonline.com/business/startup-weekend-being-planned-for-milwaukee-735a9r8-150443845.html

  • We had an organizers' kick-off meeting on Monday, May 14, at 8:30am at Starbucks in the Third Ward. In attendance were: Clint Laskowski, Matt Cordio, Joel Abraham, Tina Quealy, John McDonald, and Jodi Elias. We took a vote and agreed that I'd continue as the lead organizer. Some of the action items from the kick-off were:
    • Matt Cordio will look into scheduling a tour of Discovery World during the morning of May 21.
    • Tina Quealy will pull together some of her event planning outlines to help plan the details of Startup Weekend Milwaukee.
    • Clint Laskowski will reach out to Milwaukee MakerSpace, Baker Tilly, Bucketworks, and BizStarts Milwaukee and seek their participation on the Organizing Committee.
    • We need to select the date and venue for the event. The two dates being considered are the weekend of November 9-11 and the weekend of November 16-18, 2012. Venues of interest include Discovery World, the Marquette University Law School (Eckstein Hall), and Bucketworks. In order to gain insight on the dates and venues attendees might prefer, Clint Laskowski will send a survey out to those registered for the mail-list.
    • We agreed we want to have the event priced low enough to encourage student participation, yet high enough to encourage quality. It is likely we'll stick with the $75-99 price range suggested by Startup Weekend Headquarters.

  • I sent out a survey to everyone who's signed up on the mail-list on 5/14. So far, 44 people have opened the message, 29 have clicked on the link to the survey, and 17 have left responses. The most popular weekend appears to be November 16-18, 2012. Venue suggestions have included (those with more than one vote, so far): Discovery World (4), ICC (2), MAM (5), MSOE (2), Marquette University (3), and the Medical College of Wisconsin (2).

  • We agreed to have another Organizers' meeting in three weeks, which would be late in the week of May 28 or early the week of June 4. I'd like your opinion if you'd like to meet at Starbucks again (I think it will be too small if everyone shows up), or if you can host our meeting (likely 8-15 people).

  • Remember, were looking for Sponsors, Coaches (Mentors), Speakers, and Judges. I'll be sending out a description of Startup Weekend's recommended three-tiered sponsor program soon. If you know of a potential Sponsor, Coach (Mentor), Speaker, or Judge, please let me know. I won't reach out until we're ready, but I'd like to continue adding to the list I've started.

  • I'll also be sending out an update to the entire mail-list in the next few days just to let everyone know we're organizing and making progress.
That's all for this update. Look for more news soon!
