I am putting together the slides for my presentation (4 minutes max!) and need some help with things I could figure out myself, but I suspect other do on a regular basis:

I would like to come up with 3 maps showing Hacker/Maker spaces around the world, one for the midwest, one for the US and one for the world.
I found this for the US (and can zoom into the midwest easily)
But PrintScreen and Shift  PrintScreen don't seem to do anything, I also would like to make the map pins stand out more - brightly colored larger icons sort of thing.

I also need pictures of some of the every day items people have made being used (so its obvious what they are for.)
Like the wooden ring to hold up the cleaner bottle, etc.

Thanks

If Jim's images don't do it for ya, we can talk later today when you
pick me up.

Vista?

Sorry, I'm a Curmudgeon, I'm still running XP and don't plan on changing anytime soon :-)

PrintSceen and Alt-PrintScreen both cause a bit map image to placed
into the Window clipboard on virtually all versions of Windows. You
then need to open some sort of program capable of hosting an image and
do Edit | Paste.

Paint under Accessories in the Start menu will work fine.

Plain PrintScreen grabs the whole desktop. Alt-PrintScreen grabs the
window that currently has the focus.

The Apple people are nodding in acknowledgement right now.  Shane probably has Vista or 7, if not I can grab whatever screenshots you need.

Nope. XP forever.

I use a little program called "PicPick" for screenshots and haven't
had a problem yet....

Tom, I'm assuming you've gone through the Flickr stream, our gallery, etc. If you want actual products related to the space, feel free to use the button(s) I sell, and the DVDs than Ben sells based on building electric vehicles as real-world examples.

See my button(s) for sale here: http://store.2xlnetworks.com/

To Royce's point, the printscreen button works fine as he described. I usually past into MS Paint if nothing else. You should not need a third party utility unless your doing a lot of screen grabs and need something faster.

I am a little leery of such sites. Even CNET's download.com has begun
wrapping the installers with their own installers that install adware
and/or crapware in addition to whatever it is you are trying to get.

Pretty generally if I want the software I will take the trouble to
track down the author's site.

I agree.

From a personal standpoint, it would seem to me that CNET is no longer
reliable.

I highly recommend Greenshot, which I just started using a few weeks ago:  http://getgreenshot.org/

And it's open source.

Thanks for all the suggestions.   For some reason printscreen doesn't work on the machine I tried it on.

Most of the pictures are of the items, not them being used or in their final position.
I am looking for pictures that I can show briefly without describing to give people the idea that we make useful things.

The presentation is limited to 4 minutes and somewhere in there I need to describe the business model as well :-)

I just put Greenshot on my system. Easy to use, all of 30 seconds from starting download to first use. 2 Thumbs up.
