I've been working on how to securely mount the PHEV kit in the back of the Prius while still being able to get at the spare tire under the steel box. I'll be putting in some weld nuts to hold it down, but my main concern is accessing the spare tire. A friend suggested using some ratchet straps to lift it up and that looks like it'll work really good except for one thing, setting it back down. Does anyone know of a ratchet strap or similar device that ratchets in both directions so I can pick up the box AND let it back down? Obviously, I'd want to keep this device in the car so it can't be huge. The box weighs around 170 lbs with everything in it.

Tim,
When was the last time you got a flat or a blow out? It has been over 15 years since I had to change a tire on the road with a spare. Consequently I'm just not too concerned about leaving the spare tire out for daily driving. If I'm going on a road trip over a hundred miles then it's not problem to throw the spare, jack and lug wrench in the back. Plus the less weight the better.

These are capable of racheting down as well as up, but might be a bit big for your use:
I have an interesting antique chain hoist that uses no gears, just 2 pulleys differing by 1 tooth tied together. You could make one any size you want using any material.
