Hi all!
Wife ran out of diesel in 1008.  After putting 5 gal. in, she cracked it until batteries died.  AAA road service had 2 of their trucks hookup -1 truck  to each battery to get her started, did not work and starter stopped making cranking sounds.  I put two new batteries in, I get lights, glow plugs and idiot lights, but no starter.  No sound, nothing. I'm thinkin bad starter?

Hate to say it, but it could well be she fried the
starter solenoid (providing a CUCV has one).

There may be a relay before the starter (which I have
a vague recollection of one being mentioned a while
back). If that is the case, the symptoms you describe
would be appropriate, it could be fried and
you may have got off lightly.

Also, you may be really lucky and it is nothing more
than a fuse or circuit breaker, but I doubt it.

Worse case scenario price wise is the starter.

Once you locate the problem and replace the item, just
be wary of the other items I have mentioned. There could
be burnt contacts, which are not desirable as you will
get stuttering rather than solid cranking.
Best to replace any components that have been damaged
at this time than have them take out your starter
later on.

Regards
Doug

How would you check the relay? It's also a 12v starter. It was changed
over by the local FD.

Don't you know that if you run a diesel out of fuel, that it's much
more serious than just putting more diesel back in the tank?
You have to bust open the hood, disconnect your fuel lines, probably
your filter, and poor diesel back into every spot that air snuck into.

Also, starters are electric motors with a very short duty cycle. You
simply can't crank on them over and over and over. I personally
wouldn't do anything over 10 seconds of cranking for every 5 minutes.
You've burned something up.

Actually there is a bleeding procedure that must be preformed before trying to re-start. I don't remember exactly how it is done since i have not had to do it since  1986..........however  i remember these little  black plastic  knobs  on a thingy mounted to the passenger side firewall.

your mileage may vary
