As has probably been noticed, the cartridge for the Laserjet 8000 is shot.  I found a replacement cartridge - $82 + $9 shipping for HP brand, only $5 less for off-brand - site is http://www.quikshiptoner.com/catalog/hp-laserjet-8000-toner.html

Don't know if we want to sink the $ into it, but I thought I would post the info in case.

Do we have any other known issues with that printer? I'd see no reason not to work up the funds for a new cartridge if we don't have to sink a lot of money into it otherwise.

With all the back to school specials hitting this week and for the
next month, the price of toner is within $10 of a new laser printer on
sale (and with a warranty). Does it really make more sense to buy the
toner instead of a new printer?

This cartridge is rated for 15,000 impressions.  you might get 2500 from one of the low-cost lasers (not counting the "starter" cartridge, which are often lower-capacity)
A new cartridge for one of those low-cost printers costs ~$30 - $60, so you'd need to spend anywhere from $180 - $320 in cartridges for the low-end to meet the same quantity.  Additionally, most drums for those low end units won't even last 15,000 impressions.

My only thought is that the printer we have right now is used and it was having issues the other day. Are we certain that it is good enough to make it through a new cartridge without needing other work done on it? Other thing to consider is that if it does break down will we be able to make continued use of the cartage that we would then be stuck with?

The info about the difference in cartridges is a good point but it makes the assumption that we will have continual use out of the printer we currently have. If we have cause to think that we would get a decent portion or all of the estimated use out of the cartridge we buy then I would say it sounds like it's worth it.

When I got to the space around 9 today the gate was open. I had to do some immediate computer work cause my internet was out at home. Around 9:30 I walked around tryinig to find who was in the back. No one. So I brought my car around and parked in the shade of the bldg and clodes the gate. Before I couldl lock it a guy came through hauling stuff. Later they asked me to move my car so they could get the fork lift out. They said they would be moving stuff in from the other building. When I left at noon the gate was still open. Now I feel like I should have locked the gate....but I don't want to make anyone mad. I'd be happy to go back and lock the gate if you think I should.

The only issue I remember is that the patch cable was bad and once
replace all appeared to be working.

The prints were coming out extremely streaked w/only about 30-40% coverage.  Plus there was a ghost image about 3in to the right

That could be the toner cartridge doing that. It's too bad we don't have another one to test with to verify.

Yes, it seems like the wiper arm on the transfer drum is shot

Is that what the service kit is for?

No, the service kits for this machine are for the fuser and paper rollers.  The transfer drum/wiper arm is integrated into the cartridge.

The wiper should be built in to the toner cartridge. The service kit is
usually a transfer roller, charge roller, and pick rollers for the paper
trays and separator pads for the multi-purpose tray. Possibly a fuser
depending on the kit.

Just revived a dead thread, but just order a cartridge for the 8000N printer. Its a generic, but highly rated. Just need a permanent location for the printer now.

Awesome, We can put it back in the server room on the bottom shelf, we just need to clear out a spot for it. Can work on this Friday.

Do we have old PC's we upcycle for a print server? If not I can pull a couple of dells, and put them up there. Just let me know.

The 8000 has a NIC in it, this way we don't have to use a print server.

Do we know how much RAM it has? If it only has the base 16MB, we may want to throw it on a server anyway

If it's got 64MB or more it should be fine, but if we're going to start throwing large, high-dpi circuit layouts and such at it and it's only got 16MB, we might want to consider it

And we don't have to set up a whole 'nother system if it's needed - one of those extra wireless routers we have should be able to have a USB port added in and converted to a print server with no trouble.

You can still get 64MB DIMM for that printer (100 pin 64MB SDRAM DIMM) or I might have some in my stack-o-memory-sticks...

I just moved the printer from Member Storage to the server room. I pulled the board and we currently have 1 8 MB and 1 16 MB 100 pin  SDRAM DIMMs installed. So right now we're sitting at 24 MB.  There are 3 total RAM slots and they max out at 64  MB each so we cap at 192 MB.

If anyone has some of this type of memory that wants to donate it, please let me know and I'll arrange to get it form you.

If we get to a point where 192 MB isn't cutting it, we have 2 open EIO ports on the printer that we can buy a HDD for and install it. We should cross that bridge when we get to it.

Once the cartridge gets here we'll get the printer up and running on the network.

Did you check the parts organizer in the fire room? That part of the wall is group stuff but there's multiple old ram chips there.
