So, the ladies would like to build an area for hoarding of shared use of crafting supplies. The board has okayed it. We'd like to get a shelving unit so we have space to separate out supplies (sewing/yarn crafts/paints/ beads etc.) Claudio/Dan/Ben estimate that a shelving unit would cost us $100-$125.  I'm in for $30.  Who else is in?

Any additional money raised over what we need for the unit would go towards organizational items such as baskets or other containers so the shelves are not a hot mess.

Thanks,
-k

Will this work for you guys?

The only beef I have with it is it only has 4 shelves.

Here is one with 5, but its only 36x18.

<GeekCalc>

Option A has 3456 SQin of surface, equating to 3.24 cents per square inch.

Option B has 3240 SQin of surface, equating to 3.77 cents per square inch.

Option A has better bang for the buck :D

Oh one other one. Has plastic storage bins included with the shelves. 99 plus tax. Will this be big enough for the crafting palooza?

@Rachel - Awesome! I have a few too, along with the stuff that's in them.

@Ben -   I like the first one better. It does only have four shelves, but it's a good height and it's on rollers (I didn't see that the other one was?). So, it'll be easy to move if we need to. And, I'm sure we can come up with some ideas to maximize the space.

You can order individual shelves for the SHE18487 for $14 ea from Seville if needed:

Ok, now I'm torn. The one from Sam's Club does have promise. And the upside for the non-freakishly tall people is that it's about two feet shorter. And we could still put bins or tubs on top if we needed to.

It's definitely not as large as they other one. I think we'd have more room to customize and expand with the Seville one.

Keep in mind to that we have other DIY options too.  These don't replace the need for a cabinet, but they provide great options for storing items.  Most of these are parametric, so you can specify the dimensions you want.

I'm ok with the pre made wire shelves, but I can't deny the maker in me. I really love the thingiverse projects Sonny posted.

http://ana-white.com:80

These are plans for a "puzzle" bookcase / shelves that could totally be customized to our unique personality as a maker group.
Also, this is just one of MANY plans/ideas we can choose from. I would be willing to come any time this week to get some of this started. Doesn't have to be building the shelves, just what ever is decided.

Does any or everybody have a time we could meet up and get this ball rolling?

Rachel,

I couldn't pull up the specific plans you mentioned. But, I'm not opposed to something being built instead of bought as long as it's big enough to suit our needs without being too cumbersome if we ever need to move it.

I'm trying to finish typesetting an issue of my magazine so I can get it off to the printer for a proof. Unless some kind of editorial miracle happens tonight it's not likely I'll be available the rest of the week.

Joe,

Throwing my cards in man!  You get the pot!  I'm loving this tetris bookshelf!  I think it would be perfect!  Just make it in smaller sections, and join each section with a removable device. Even if we don't use it for the craft shelving, it would be awesome anywhere in the space....
Hell, we could even design the whole common room around a tetris theme....just throwing that out there....

I wanted to say thanks again to everyone who donated money towards the shelving unit, and to Rachel for suggesting we have a spot for craft stuff at the space!

Several people have mentioned they have items to contribute to stocking the shelves. I know I do. Would you guys like to set a time to bring all of our supplies up there and merge and  organize?

In addition to crafting supplies, Mary and I talked about having binders for knitting, crochet, and sewing patterns/projects. So, if you have anything along those lines that would be great too!

I will be at the space on Sunday around 1 p.m. to put the shelf together (if that hasn't already been done) and to start organizing our craft stuff.

I might make it up there Saturday afternoon/evening, but I'll be there Sunday for sure. So, if you have organizational or craft items to donate, this weekend would be a good time to start dropping stuff off.

Also, if you want to help organize craft supplies, your time would be much appreciated!

I have no clue what Mary was wanting to donate for that. Hopefully she'll be home later today and could bring stuff out.
