I've spoken with Lynn Sipes, ThyssenKrupp Elevator's plant manager for the Middleton, TN, manufacturing plant, about organizing a tour for any of the Midsouth Makers folks that might be interested in checking out the kind of fabrication stuff they do, particularly in the areas of CNC use and sand casting. Middleton is located about 1.5 hours east of Memphis (multiple routes depending on where you're leaving from). They seem interested in accommodating a group, but would like to know a rough headcount before making a commitment. This is a huge facility where they build everything from circuit boards and cables to the actual elevator cars themselves, so plenty of cool stuff to see. If/when I get everything worked out with Lynn, I'll get back to you guys so we can firm up the details. Most of the manufacturing takes place on weekdays from 6am-4pm, but I think they may also be open on at least some weekends. Safety  gear is required in plant visits, so if you have steel toed shoes or safety glasses, be sure to bring them. They have a small supply of steel-toed galoshes and glasses there for visitors as well. Long pants are also required. Also, there will be a lot of walking involved (probably a couple of miles by the end of the tour), so if you're like me, prepare to be sore afterward.

Thanks!

Hey Jonathan

Tell Lynn I said hello. The plant tour is pretty impressive.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to get away from work though J

Take Care,

I agree with Keith it's an impressive place to see.  Make sure to check out the Detestation Dispatch  Simulator in the showroom we installed.  It's a one stop elevator, a very rare thing.
