Hi,
I've been searching WORD for the symbol "arithmetic mean" , pronounced
"X-bar". Any idea? I appreciate your support!

Hi, Fred,

The best way to do this is to make a field. Fortunately, you only have to go
through this once, and then you can store it as an AutoText or AutoCorrect
item for future use.

First press Ctrl+F9 to create a pair of field braces. Inside the braces,
type
eq \o(x,-)
where the \o means "overtype." The dash is an en dash made with Ctrl+the
minus sign on the number pad.

If you want the x to be italic, highlight it and italicize it. Next,
highlight the dash, go to Format/Font on the Character Spacing tab, and set
the Position to Raised by 4 pt. (If you want it higher or lower, you can
change the number.)

Delete the space that Word automatically puts between the closing
parenthesis and the closing field brace; otherwise, the space would always
display as part of the field.

Finally, press F9 to update the field. If you still see the field code
instead of the x-bar, press Alt+F9 to switch the code off.

To save the result for later, first highlight the x-bar. You have a choice
of AutoText or AutoCorrect: For AutoText you select Insert/AutoText/New and
give it a name (maybe "xbar"); when you type the name and press Tab, it does
the substitution. For AutoCorrect, you select Tools/AutoCorrect, make sure
the Formatted Text radio button is selected, put the name in the Replace
box, and click Add and then OK; when you type the name followed by a space
or punctuation, it does the substitution.
