Using Autotext in an input form?

I have an app where the users are entering large amounts of text in a
multi-line text box. It would be very helpful if they could use Autocorrect
(or something like it) to type in abbreviations and have them automatically
expand into the text. Has anyone figured out a way to do this? TIA

If the input has such consistency of input that you were considering
autocorrect entries, then surely it would be simpler to select the content

No, because this is a medical application. There are about 5,000 words and
phrases that would have to go in a dropdown field. The idea of using
Autocorrect is to speed up entry, but having to select from a list that size
would slow entry down enormously.

OK, then unformatted autocorrect entries will work in text form fields.
Unformatted autocorrect entries are limited to 255 characters.

Umm, I don't mean to nag, but how do I get it to work? I set up a test form
and our existing Autocorrect entries, at least, don't work in the text field.

It will only work with plain text autocorrect entries. Do you have 'replace
text as you type' checked in autocorrect options?
It works for me 'out of the box' in Word 2003 and 2007.

Yes, 'replace text as you type' is set, and we're using plain text entries.
We use them all the time and they work fine in a document, but not in a text
box in a form. (We have Word 2003 SP3 v 11.something, BTW.) I've tried it
on another computer in our office, and no go.

Maybe something's not referenced in the object library that should be?
