I have a table with
Artist name in col. a
Painting number in col. b
Painting name in col. c
Medium in col. d
Price in col.e

Each artist has a space between his/her's and the next artist's
collection

When i sort by painting numbers b, then a, the blank lines\spaces get
removed from between artists and are put to the top of the list - and
any cell formatting, usually borders, doesn't stay where it was

The table uses 3 pages, each with a header row. header and
footer

What should I be doing to get around this prob?

Using word 2000

When you're sorting by painting numbers, presumably you don't need the blank
rows? So what you need is devious thinking. In Column B of each "blank" row,
put a number that is larger than the highest painting number. Color it
white. This will sort the blank rows to the bottom. In Column A of each
blank column put an artist's name and color it white. If you sort by
artist's name and painting name (or anything other than painting number),
the blanks will sort to the top of each artist's listing; if you sort by
artist's name and painting number, they'll sort to the bottom of the
artist's listing; either will give you a blank row between artist's with
minimum fiddling. You may have to experiment with this to get the effect you
want, but it might start you in the right direction.

Hi Martin,

If you require a space between each entry but also want to be able to
sort the contents of the table instead of inserting a blank row you
could go to "Table/Table Properties../Options" and set the Bottom
Default Cell Margin to the desired size to give you the space you
need.

Regards,
Cameron

I actually want a space between each group of paintings
It varies between 1 and 10
