Hello !

Would someone be kind enough as to
tell me where to find and how to insert
a more voluminous dictionary (I need English and
French) into Word 2003 ?
I've asked this question on the French group but
they seem to be of the opinion that the Word dictionary
already installed is enough, but it's not for my purpose
as I translate between the two languages.

Thank you for your help,

JC

As a professional translator myself I can say that the Word-supplied
dictionaries can never be enough as they're intended for a completely
different (general) market.

Hi Jessie,

Are you referring to the Word proofing tools speller or the Dictionary's available through the Research Pane services when connected
online
Select a word, Alt+click in the document to open the Research pane and in the Research Pane options check to see if the Encarta
French and English dictionaries are set.

Hi JC,

If you open the Office Research pane, you will see "Research Options" at the
bottom. These options will enable you to activate a whole range of resources,
which include the Encarta monolingual dictionaries for English and for
French. It's a web service, so they will not be installed on your machine and
you need to be connected to the internet.

Once these are activated, you can right-click on a word and select "Look
up" to display the definitions (and examples...) from these monolingual
dictionaries. Alternatively, you can also use ALT-Click on a word to display
these dictionary entries (as well as the Office English-French,
French-English bilingual dictionaries, which, as Opinicus says, are certainly
too limited for professional translators).

I hope this helps,

Best wishes,

Thierry

I'm on Word 2003; do I need to change versions ?

Thanks

Hi JC,

No, Office 2003 has all the features. Since you speak French, you can check
this post out and you'll see a screenshot with the "Research Options"
hyperlink at the bottom of the Research pane (under Get Services on Office
Marketplace)

http://blogs.msdn.com/correcteurorthographiqueoffice/archive/2006/05/09/dict-e-du-balfroid-correcteur-orthographique-de-word-et-dictionnaire-monolingue-d-encarta.aspx

It's under the definition of "cacochyme" in the Encarta dictionary: French.
That's where you can activate this resource (as well as the other
dictionaries you might need).

Does it help?
