Hello,

I'm typing up a thesis, and within that Thesis I have to change from
landscape to portrait many times, which I am finally doing with the section
next page technique.

BUT, the thesis guide requires all page numbers to be at the top a la
portrait....

Does anyone know how to have a landscape page with a portrait type number?

And on a lesser note, the first page of each chapter has to have the number
at the bottom of the page and all other pages it is supposed to be at the
top. I thought sections would do this but header/footer seems to work
across the sections vice only within the section.

Thank you for any advice.

In article <8cqch7$ct5$1...@nntp9.atl.mindspring.net>,
ms15...@mindspring.com says...
Put the page number - on that page - in a text box or single cell table
and rotate the text.

To have the page number in a different position on the first page of a
chapter, you must first of all have your page numbers inserted in the header
and footer (not using Insert Page Numbers). Click the Page Setup button on
the Header/Footer toolbar, which takes you to the Layout tab of Page Setup,
and select "Different first page." You will then have a separate First Page
Header/Footer. For the landscape sections you'll want to deselect this
option. For that you'll have to deselect "Same as Previous" as well so that
the sections can have different headers and footers and other settings.

As for the portrait page number (or header/footer) on a landscape page, this
can be done in Word 97 and 2000. There is an excellent article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base, "WD97: How to Add a Portrait Page Number to a
Landscape Page." You can get a copy of this article via email by sending a
message to msh...@microsoft.com with Q162235 as the subject, or you can read
the article online at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q162/2/35.asp. The article
steps you through setting up a separate section for the landscape pages,
unlinking the header and footer from the previous and following sections,
and several methods of adding the page number (or an entire header/footer as
needed).

If you have an earlier version of Word, you will probably have to accomplish
this with two passes through the printer. Create the tables in a separate
document and, when editing is complete, insert page breaks to create the
needed number of (correctly numbered and headed) blank pages in your main
document. After printing the portrait document, run the blank pages back
through the printer to print the tables.
