Hi all,

My apologies if this has already been asked and answered; my
appreciation to anyone who can point me to the answer.

I am using MS Word 2007. When a .docx file contains a large number of
list items (bulleted + numbered), the bullet and number list labels
disappear after the approximately ~2040th list item. Bullets and
numbers prior to the ~2040th one appear correctly. Trying to apply
list formatting on a paragraph after the ~2040th list item has no
effect on the paragraph.

I've tried a myriad of things to troubleshoot this, including saving
the .docx as a .doc file. In the .doc file, I see the same thing.

Does anyone know if this is a known bug? or am I doing something
wrong?

Thanks,
Susan

In a quick test, I see no problem with list numbers larger than 2045. Could you be more specific about the formatting of these lists? For example: Is there any leading or trailing text included with the number? Which number alignment has been applied? Which indentation has been specified?

Thinking about it, it would be even better if you could send me a sample document to stefan DOT blom AT mvps DOT org.

I received a sample document in which I was able to reapply the numbering by copying the list format and manually add the restarts back.

Long-term, setting up a multilevel list that can take care of the restarts automatically would be the best solution. For more on multilevel lists, see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html.
