Landscape tables on portrait pages?

Using Word 97.

I am working on a document where most pages are portrait, with header
and footer at top and bottom of the page.

However, on some pages I want to include tables that are rotated by 90
degrees (i.e. viewed as landscape), but I still want the headers and
footers to remain at the top and bottom of the (portrait) page.

How do I do this?

See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/LandscapeSection.htm for
detailed instructions.

I'm glad you found it helpful. Dave, Bill, and I agonized over that article
for weeks, and it underwent many revisions. The result is so long and
detailed that few users actually bother to read it all, and even I have to
print it out and follow it carefully when I'm trying to put a portrait
header on a landscape page (luckily I don't have to do it often!), but it
*does* work!

Yes, the article is rather long, but it was crystal clear -- it's one of
those things that takes much longer to describe than to actually do.
Making sure that the landscape header/footer were in the exact same
position as the portrait header/footer was a bit awkward, but it does
work.

We recently discovered a shortcut, but I'm blamed if I can remember what it
was; I guess it was the discovery that (at least in Word 2002, and maybe
2000) you can rotate text in a frame without needing a table.

Yes, that does it. I was just surprised to learn that, since I'm pretty sure
it wasn't possible in Word 97 (or if it was, MS didn't bother to tell anyone
<g>).

Yes, Word 97 does let you rotate text, but:

a. It only works on text. Many of my landscape pages contain more than
just plain text, so the rotate option isn't generally helpful.

b. It gets tiresome lying on your side when editing rotated text!

Turn your monitor on its side, or get a Tablet PC :-)

You can actually edit sitting upright if you view the text in Normal view,
but that can be even more disconcerting because it's usually wrapped into a
very narrow space.
