Assuming Word 97, and assuming a picture watermark rather than a text
watermark:
Insert-> Picture-> From File, Choose the picture you want as a watermark.
Check the Float Over Text box and click Insert. If needed, move and/or
resize the picture to get it where you want it.
Right-click the picture and choose Format Picture from the pop-up menu.
On the Colors & Lines tab, set Color to No Fill and Line to No Line.
On the Wrapping tab, choose None. On the Picture tab, in the Color
drop-down list, choose Watermark. (Or, if this is a color picture
and you want the watermark to be monochromatic, click Grayscale.)
Click OK to return to the document.
Right-click the picture and from the pop-up menu, click Order, then click
Send Behind Text
If you want the watermark on every page, follow the same steps but in the
document's header or footer.
If you want a text watermark rather than a graphic, the steps are similar
except:
- Start by inserting a text box instead of a picture and type the text
inside the box.
- You must right-click the *border* of the text box to adjust its Line,
Color, and Wrap properties, and again when you send it behind the text.
- To make the text gray, select it, click Format-> Font-> Color, and
choose 25% gray. (This makes for a much less subtle watermark than
you get with a picture. There may be a better way I don't know of.)
