I have been using MS Word 5 forever. I am a musician and use it to compile
set lists where I frequently add and delete songs from the play list. All
iahve to do is to hit the "re-number" command, and the list is re-numbered.
Can you do this in Office/Word?

Hi =?Utf-8?B?QmlnRG9nTXVycGh5?=,

You mean you're currently using DOS Word and are thinking of moving to Word for
Windows? If you use the "auto numbering" in WinWord, then you don't have to do
anything - it renumbers for you.

If you use fields (such as an SEQ), then Ctrl+A, F9 will force the fields to
update, including the numbering.

Actually, I'm on a Mac with Microsoft Office. I used word 5 for mac prior to
that, and I had no problems updating the set list. Simply hit re-number and
that's exactly what it did. I just can't seem to get Office word to do that.
It places a new row of numbers outside the old numbers, instead of just
renumbering!!

Is your recommendation going to allow that?

It sounds as if you have numbered your paragraphs manually instead of using
auto numbering. You need to remove the plain-text numbers.

I removed the manual numbers, and now it renumbers, but it renumbers the
whole set list, instead of just the affected page. Is there a way to prevent
that. Word 5 had it just right, but the Mac OSX wants to use the "advanced"
technology!!

Can you help with renumbering just one page of the set list, there are 6
pages total. And, Office renumbers everyone of them instead of just set 1,
or set 2, etc.

I guess I'm not clear on what you want to do, but if you want different runs
of numbering, you can use Restart Numbering as needed or create an
outline-numbered list so that Level 2 restarts automatically after Level 1.

Example:

I perform 60 songs per night. I have 4 different performance sets. Each
set has it's own list. Set 1 thru set4.

I want to be able to change each of those lists independent of the next. In
other words, If I decide to remove four songs from set (page) 1, and ad two
songs to set (page) two, each set should relect the number (re-number)
change starting from the number 1!

How do I do that?

Define an outline-numbered list as described at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. Use Level 1
for the set number (Set 1, Set 2, etc.) and Level 2 for the song number. The
songs will renumber automatically when reordered and when dragged or
copy/pasted from one list to another.

Is there no simpler way to do this. I am just about to the point of
trashing this Office set-up and getting word 5 and use it in the OSX
"classic" environment, which allows one to revert to previous software
versions only useable in older systems.

This whole process you have directed me towards, is really complicated, and
after reading it, it requires using features for whixh I otherwise would
never use.

Is there a more simple way, to re-number lines on each page, independent of
the other pages???

You could use any number of SEQ fields. One for each song if you like. eg

{SEQ ASong}. The only snag is that you will have to update the fields after
any changes to ensure you have the right numbers displayed. The easiest way
to do that is to use an update macro attached to a toolbar button eg the
code at http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm . Save the SEQ field for
each sequence as an autotext entry or autocorrect entry for ease of
insertion eg save {SEQ ASong} as an autocorrect for (say) #a {SEQ BSong} as
#b etc. Type the appropriate # letter to insert a number for that sequence.
When you have finished click the update button :)

If each song really takes up only one line and each set only one page, you
could use line numbering. On the Layout tab of Page Setup, click Line
Numbers..., check the box for "Add line numbering," and choose "Restart each
page." Assuming there's some sort of heading on each page (Set 1, Set 2,
etc.), select this paragraph, go to the Line and Page Breaks tab of Format |
Paragraph, and check "Suppress line numbering."

But I think using outline numbering would be much easier. You define a Set
style that is linked to Level 1 numbering. Both the number and the "Set"
prefix are part of the numbering, so you don't need any other text. You
define a Song style that is linked to the Level 2 numbering, set to restart
after Level 1. Neither style needs to have any kind of fancy formatting; it
can be just the same as Normal or Body Text except for the numbering. Adding
numbering then becomes a simple matter of applying the style, and songs will
renumber automatically as they are moved from one position or set to
another. It takes only a couple of minutes to set this up initially and zero
time to maintain afterward.

That said, there is no reason you can't equally well just apply the List
Number style to all your songs. The only hitch with that is that you have to
manually restart numbering for each set.

In this direction from Shauna Kelly info, she mentions Heading 1, and Heading
2. All I see is Header, and then Heading 4,5,6,7,8. Am I looking in the
right place??

Don't understand your question. Lines? Please describe how the lines are
numbered and someone may be able to tell you how to renumber them.

Automatic numbering in Word is broken. I believe that the most durable fix,
for use in heavily edited documents like the one you are describing, is to
use outline numbering set up following the procedures prescribed by Shauna
Kelly. See: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your
Word document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. (For
bullets see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html, the
subject is related.) This is not simple but it works easily once you have it
set up.
