How do I make Microsoft Word default application

How do I make Microsoft Word default application when opening .doc files from
Hotmail?
I have Vista and my version of Word is from a Microsoft Office XP for
Students and Teachers.

Somehow Hotmail chose Windows Word Pad as the default application which
doesn't give the full document. I was able to pick what appears to be
Microsoft Word in Control Panel>Default Programs>Set Associations but it
shows up as "wordicon" under the current default section for .doc as opposed
to "Microsoft Word" which shows up as the current default for .dochtml files.
With "wordicon" selected no file even appears.

For what it's worth I'm using Firefox but I get the same results w/ IE.
