This could be a limitation of the trial version, so my answer might not
apply.

To make sure you can see an inserted picture, select the "Tools" menu
and choose "Options." From the options menu, select the "View" tab.
In the top section, uncheck the "Picture placeholders" box and click
"OK."

You should now be able to see your inserted graphic.

Ensure you are in print layout view. Uncheck tools > options > view >
picture placeholders.
If that doesn't fix it, update the display driver and/or reduce the display
hardware acceleration.
The fact that this is a trial is irrelevant. The trial will work as a full
Word version for the duration.
