In Office Word 2007 I want to strikethrough a word. I simply right click and
select font and then click strikethrough and go on. Until I get to a word
that is not in the dictionary. Now the right click menu is taken over with
all kinds of new choices for spell checking the word and I have no way to
change the font to strike through.

Working in a technical field with an entire new dictionary of technical
terms and obscure proper names makes this function in word a pain in the
keester. I am now back to a wrestling match with word, something I thought I
had left behind two generations of office updates ago. These context
sensitive menus have gone too far.

Can some one tell me how to turn off teh context sensitive menu switch? Can
someone explain why it was necessary to make such a drastic assumption that
spell check was to completely take over the right click action? Why can't
the spell check functions cascade off of a single spell check entry on the
right click menu and leave the rest of the right click menu selections intact?

Thanks,
BS

FWIW, the action of shortcut menus has not changed in Word 2007; I find this
equally annoying in Word 2003.

Wouldn't it be simpler if you simply clicked the strikethrough button on the
Home tab? Then you would have no right click menus to consider.

I'll second you in getting annoyed by this. Checking spelling is _never_ my
default priority.

Hi BrusselsSporut,

As Graham mentioned there is a built in choice on the Word 2007 Ribbon Home tab in the 'Font' group, that will apply strikethrough
to text you have selected with a single click, rather than right click, select Font, select strikethrough.

Other workarounds include

-right clicking that strikethrough ribbon choice and choosing
the 'Add to Quick Access Toolbar' to have it always visible.

-Turn off 'check spelling as you type' from
Office Button=>Word Options=>Proofing
to not see the spell correction clutter on the right click menu, but rather to process the new words in 'batch mode' by pressing F7
to walk through a document.

-Assign a keyboard shortcut to strikethrough through
Office Button=>Word Options=>Customize=>Keyboard shortcuts
and choose the 'Home Tab' and then 'Strikethrough' choices

-Use Word's Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) abilities to modify the right click menu to add 'Strikethrough' as a choice.

Agreed. But that's because I'm a good speller. <g>

Ding Ding Ding Ding! Yes the right answer is there in front of me. Although
I still want to strangle the new Office/Vista UI team lead and minions.
