I have a client, sometimes when they open a Word document over the VPN the
document gets really slow to refresh and enter data. Painfully slow.

After lots of troubleshooting I have narrowed it down to just word
documents, all versions of Office they are using XP, 2003, 2007.

When the document is running slowly, there is a lot of traffic over the
network connection. If you close the document, not Word, then reopen the same
document, it usually works as expected, with no network traffic. So, it seems
like the desktop is not working with a local copy of the file.

I believe I have eliminated any network or server issues. The server was
replace a few months before I took over. I switched from a T1 to a VPN.
Rewired both ends of the network, it was a mess.

Is it with all document or older documents?

Is the option, 'Copy remotely stored files onto your computer and update the
remote file when saving' checked?

I don't know where that setting is.

Let me know, I plan on visiting this client tomorrow.

In Word 2007, the setting is under Word Options, Advanced tab, under the
SAVE section.

I did my weekly visit. Before I tried changing this setting, I could not
recreate the issue to save my life. However, this really does sound like the
issue, so I made the change on all of the computers.

If it works all week, I will consider this issue resolved.

I will update this post, either way.

Thanks for all of your help.

That was it, they have been using Word over the VPN all week with no issues.

Thank you very much
