I am using Word 2002 on Windows XP. For some reason, my fill color button
(which highlights text) does not work. It shows up on the toolbar, but when
I click it nothing happens. When I click the drop down button, the colors
are dimmed. (I sometimes have this problem when the color is white, which
matches the background color of the document. This is not the problem
here -the problem here is that the colors are dimmed and simply do not work)
Any suggestions?

There are several buttons in Word that have similar icons or effects:

1. Fill Color (paint can) and Line Color (artist's brush). These are found
on the Drawing toolbar and affect only AutoShapes, including text boxes.

2. Shading Color (paint can) and Border Color (artist's brush). These are
found on the Tables and Borders toolbar and affect only text paragraphs and
table cells.

3. Highlight (highlighter). Found on the Formatting toolbar. Applied to
selected text.
