Over the last few days, we have been having some problems opening Word
docments. These documents have been created using Word Automation in Access
but the problem presents itself when opening the documents in Word.

A message indicating that mswrd632.wpc cannot be opened is displayed. This
message is repeated three times and then the doucment open OK.

The cause of this appears to be the application of MS Security Bulletin
MS09-073, release 8 December 2009. This has been proved as removing the patch
also removes the problem.

There is mention of a registry amendment to avoid the problem in the
Security Bulletin but we have had no success applying this change. The user
has reported that they cannot findd the key mentioned.

This is a Windows XP network using Office 2007. Documents are saved as Word
97-2003 format for compatability with other users who may not be able to
accept Word 2007 formats.

It appears that the security bulletiin is aimed at Wordpad documents.

Any ideas?

Also, how can I report this to Microsoft. There are people on the TV who
have been telling MS how to build Windows 7. Can you also tell them there is
a problem with what they have already sold you ;o)

Hi Terry -
It would be nice if the "fix" could be posted to the FAQs or perhaps any
mention at all of the mswrd632.wpc issue on the MS site would be appreciated.
I know you are just the messenger but this would you kick this upstairs for
us?

And what's the MS bug/problems phone number?

MS is publishing a "workaround" - and reading their bulletin it looks like
they are not going to support using Word to open a variety of files.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891090/

talk about an non-eligant solution to a self inflicted problem - but what do
I know.

All update bugs (Windows, Office or whatever) have free bug support and you
find the number of your local MS call centre in Word Options.

I have the same problem with a older file from a colleague which I need to open urgently but with Office2007 only the error message "mswrd632 cannot be opened" appears. The workaround with the registry change has not helped me. Will MS help me with this problem also with free support?

I too have this issue on a WinXP / Word 2003 platform. I am trying to get this supposed "Free" help when it is a problem caused by their security automatic download. They don't seem to know that, they say my options are to pay them because they don't support either of these... any idea on how to remove this patch?

That you are not using WordPad is irrelevant. It seems that the converter
settings are stored in the WordPad registry key. So you to edit the registry
as advised, adding the WordPad key if it isn't present.

hey guys,
I had the same problem. I could solve it quite peculiarly...
I right-clicked the icon of the document that I wanted to open, then clicked "open with" (or "open by"? sorry I'm using the German interface and don't exactly know the English names) and chose "Internet Explorer" and clicked "open" when prompted, then it asked something like from what a file type I wanted to convert it - it was quite a long list. In this list I chose something like Word 2007 (while I'm using 2003 - just suspected the document originally was in 2007 format). Then the file opened, I clicked "save", closed it and could then normally open it with Word. Strange stuff, huh? I hope this works for you guys too.

Resaving the file with extension docx and then opening it again seemed to do the trick. It was in funny type face, but readable at least.

I have the same issue, and do not have an "open with" option when I right click on the document so that won't work for me. I see advice on another site that I delete the following registry subkey: KHEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SaredTool\TextConverters\Import\MSWord6.wpc. The site claims this will unregister the converter and that Microsoft Office will then use it's own converter to open the document.

IS THIS REALLY OK TO DO???

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973904#letmefixit :
To unregister the mswrd632 converter yourself, edit the registry as follows:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
For 32-bit versions of Windows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc
For 64-bit versions of Windows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.
This change will effectively unregister the converter and disable it for third-party applications and for Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office will use its own text converters to open these kinds of files.

Maybe part of my problem is that I don't have MS Office - I have Word 2002 as part of MS Works. What can I do in this case?

1. My software is totally up to date, using Office 2003, getting this error.
2. I don't do registry edits and should not have to do so to fix something
that y'all messed up.

It is truly evil that MS has broken Office with this Security Fix, thereby trying to force users to upgrade to a newer version of Office. Neither of the registry fixes worked for me, but I'll now try the other two methods mentioned here. I've always used MS Office, but I guarantee you that I will be switching to something else when I get the chance.

What a complete lack of integrity.

So if MS had left the converter open to attack so that your PC became
infected you would have been happy?

No Terry, they could have just fixed it so that it still worked and it wasn't open to attack, but I get the feeling that wasn't the reason. My guess is that third-parties were using the converter to get around Word and MS didn't like that. Either way, I'm hosed. I tried both of the other methods and they didn't help. I went to open it on a completely different computer that I don't think has the updates, and it not only wouldn't work there, but then Word wanted to modify my normal template on that computer. So now having a deadline, I have to completely rewrite this critical file from scratch. I've also tried it on a few other files and it's non-deterministic which ones will open and which won't, so now my huge library of docs just hit a new level of obsoleteness.
