i can view the picture on my laptop

You have a number of choices...

NetMeeting is built-in to XP Pro and Home... Go to "Start -> Run" and type conf at the command line.
Setup NetMeeting to automatically accept calls and call over your LAN using the LAN IP of the
desktop.

MS Portrait, a FREE alternative that runs extremely well on low bandwidth links and broadband
links... Setup Portrait to automatically accept calls and call over your LAN using the LAN IP of the
desktop.

iVisit runs reasonably well on XP. You can monitor multiple PC cameras and call each one direct IP
to IP over your LAN...
