Here's the problem: We want to be able to remote into that computer using
Remote Desktop over the network, and control the playback through the
speakers connected to the laptop. For some reason though, Media Player can't
find the sound card in the laptop.
Anyone know how I can remedy this, or what might be going on?
Thanks
Rog
Stop using remote desktop and just share the music directory(ies) off the
Windows XP machine and map the shares on the laptop so it can play them
locally.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
We have a whole-office audio system plumbed to the audio output of the
laptop. We need to be able to remote into the laptop using RD, and have the
audio that plays through Media Player opened in this session piped out of the
stereo jack on the laptop, and into the office system. The whole idea is to
allow the office staff to control the laptop without having to walk into the
closet.
Thanks

You can't. Remote Desktop will not use the local audio devices. I know
this is true for actual remote desktop sessions. I don't know if it's true
for remote help sessions to an XP desktop.
An alternative would be to use VNC. That just remotes the locally logged-in
session on the console. Then anyone needing to control it would have to use
a VNC client on their computer. Trivially simple to set up and free.
Just make sure that the logged-in session on the machine has appropriate
security. Make sure it's only logged into an account that has limited
access. You don't want to have everyone connecting to it and then using
that to cause other security problems. You could configure the laptop for
automatic login. And have that account setup to automatically start the
audio program.
