Error: Installation Failed: D:\i386\asms, Error Message:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O
device error.
Fatal Error: One of the components Windows needs to
continue setup could not be installed. The request could
not be performed because of an I/O device error.
I started changing components, Memory, another new hard
drive, video card, removed parts like modem, that it
didn't need, kept changing parts and restarting, get to
the same spot, same error as above. After a few days of
this I smelled something getting hot, and the computer
shutdown and would not restart. Smoked it!!
Ordered new motherboard, case, and power supply, put it
all together again and come up with same error, over and
over.
Bought a Computer Builders Windows XP C/D, it boots to the
C/D drive and loads something for 5-10 minutes then stops
on a screen that looks and works like the old DOS
system, with: E:\i386\SYSTEM32. I can set it to:
E:\setup, hit enter and a install screen comes up, the
mouse pointer even works, point to install, and it just
sets there, nothing. How do I use this computer builders
C/D?
I would like to be able to use Windows XP.
Any advance help would be appreciated.
THANK YOU
CHARLES
You need to use the original CD, this is the error message you get from a
bad burn copy of the XP CD.

Never heard of this version, is it from Microsoft, and does it have a
holographic label? What does it say on the label?

The first C/D I used is MS Windows XP Home Edition with
Certificate of Authenticity and all the 25 numbers/letters
to regester it if I ever get it installed on something to
use it on.

Try copying the XP home versions i386 folder to the hard drive, boot from a
Win 98/Me startup disk and run setup from <cd-rom>:\ i386\winnt.exe

That's right, you might want to load smartdrv.exe before the copy of the CD.
See the link below for speciakl boot disk with smartdrv.

Copying i386 to the hard drive didn't work, when you boot
with 98 or ME it creates a small temporary drive C: on
drive C, then can't find drive C:\, because it is looking
for Fat or Fat32 file system, not NTFS. Tried to boot with
95, it could not find C/D drive.
I used the System Builders Preinstallation Windows XP C/D,
it boots to the C/D drive and says its looking for
hardware and preparing system to run XP then loads
something for about 5 minutes then stops on a screen that
looks and works like the old DOS system, with: D:\i386
\SYSTEM32. I copied D:\i386 files to C:\ drive and it
copied several hundred files to C:\, I guess then stopped
on the H's, and said it was out of space on the C:\
drive, C:\ drive is 60gb hard drive. I was working on
this most of the night, so I think I will go take a nap,
and forget this for a while.
