I currently have 79 XP updates to download and install. Whilst the updates
can be completed, I have tried now for over a week to actually install them
but each one fails. Disabling the anti virus software (F-secure) doesn't
work. As some of the updates are critical, can anyone help please?

Thank you for your help,

T5

are you sure you have a guinune license
cause if it's not you can't download updates
what version of xp do you have?

Yes, it's definitely a genuine licence of XP with SP2 also.

They will never install. Do this, go to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK

Show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Using Windows Explorer [Start> All Programs> Accessories> Windows
Explorer], navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
Delete *ALL* the *contents* of the SoftwareDistribution subfolder
Close Windows Explorer

*Right* click My Computer either on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose
Properties.
Click the Automatic Updates tab
Set AU to " Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install
them "
Click Apply, OK
Go back to Start > Run > type in and click OK after each line

net start wuauserv
wuauclt /detectnow

That should get the updates downloaded again.
Click the update icon in the Notification Area.
UNcheck all of the updates except for the first FIVE.
Install them and restart the system.

Click the update icon in the Notification Area again.
Install the rest of the updates.
Restart the system.

Hi,

This didn't work. The lines to "That should get the updates going" seemed
fine. When the updates downloaded (81 now), I unchecked the first five.
They downloaded correctly but didn't install. I then tried it with just the
first and same problem.

Help before this PC goes out of the window!!!!!

You misread this:

> UNcheck all of the updates except for the first FIVE.

The first five updates are *essential* in getting the updates to
install. Since I haven't installed XP recently, it may just be the first
3, but I wanted to make sure that none were missing.

So, stop the Automatic Update service once more and then delete the
contents of the below subfolders

WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
and
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache

Then delete
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb <--- this file

Restart the system. You can wait until AU kicks in or run detectnow as
previously described in order to pull the updates down once more.

Install the first FIVE updates only, restart, and then install the rest.

Sorry, I mis-typed the last entry.

I UN checked all of the files, apart from the first 5. I also tried the
first 3, then 2 and then just the first file but they still failed.

Is there a particular file that should be downloaded first? I notice one of
them is a Critical Update but this fails also.

Sorry to be a pain,

Thanks

" serviceId " shows no Value.

Check in the Services console to see what the Startup type is for these
Services. Double
click on each one to see what the Startup type is set to.

Start > Run > type in
services.msc
Click OK
BITS can be set to Manual or Automatic, Automatic Updates must be set to
Automatic,
Remote Procedural Call (RPC) - Automatic, and Remote Procedural Call
(RPC) Locator set to
Manual.

Register the files that are used by Windows Update and Microsoft Update.
To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type the following commands, press ENTER
after each command, and then click OK every time that you receive a
verification message:

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

Restart the system and see if the updates install now.

ALSO, open the registry editor and see if this subkey is present:
Start > Run > type in

regedit
Click OK
Navigate to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\
Click the plus sign next to Ole
Is EnableCatalogCachingForBaseCOM listed under Ole ?

IF EnableCatalogCachingForBaseCOM is present, what Data [Value] does it
show ?
PLEASE, do *NOT* edit the registry yet as doing so may cause more harm
than good !

The issue *may* also be caused by a 3rd party firewall/security suite.
Which of the above is installed ?

Since your post is a little unclear, here is a suggestion for starters:

Check that your version of Windows Installer is 3.1.4000.4039 by
typing at the Start menu Run "%systemroot%\system32" and then select the
file "msi.dll" . Under File|"properties" for this file you can see the
version number. In case it is not 3.1.4000.4039, then first install security
update KB927891 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891 .

I don't understand why you are asking about the NIC card unless you are
updating the driver which I don't recommend getting from MS update anyway.

As for F-secure av, have you had this problem before with F-secure
installed? Maybe you should read the FAQs at their website if you suspect
the problem has to do with their AV program.

no that is not what i am trying to do, i am trying to turn off the PC
firewall and enable the NIC card because i have an xbox360 and i could not
join xbox live (join online play) so i called the xbox live support group and
they said this is what i have to do to be able to get online, so if you could
help me out and tell me how to do that, that would be great.

I don't understand why your NIC is disabled if you are connected to the
internet unless you are using dial-up or another connection method. Anyway,
go into Network Connections and look for your LAN connection. It should be
there unless it is disabled in the Bios. If you select it and
File|Properties you should be able to enable it if it is in fact disabled
already.
If you are referring to Windows XP sp2 firewall go to Control Panel and look
for the Windows Firewall applet and click on it. If it is enabled you can
disable it in the applet.
I was concerned that you said you could not install the Windows Updates
which may also be due to having an old version of the MS update module
itself installed. The way to update it is by going to MS update website and
manually updating it from there.

Same problem as what?

In the meantime, try this:

From a command prompt, stop the Automatic Updates service, register
wups2.dll, restart the AU Service.

Start>Run>cmd [enter]
net stop wuauserv [enter]
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll [enter]
(close out of cmd)

Also see:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation (applies to Service
Packs also):

If you need more help, provide the missing details - including what you've
already tried. The best place to get help with Windows Update questions is
in its newsgroup, microsoft.public.windowsupdate.
