How does one configure Win XP Pro SP2 such that I can open a picture
file (.jpg, .gif...) in separate windows of Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer?

Is it possible? Currently, every picture file will display in the one
instance of Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I'd like it to display
pics in separate windows so that I can compare the pics.

Thanks.

Try the following:

Open one image with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Left click the print button.

With the Print Wizard on screen...go back to your image
folder and open another image.

Close the Print Wizard...and you will have two instances
of Windows Picture And Fax Viewer open.

Copy above into a file called ImageViewer.hta. To use type in start run
"<path to above file>\ImageViewer.hta" "file you want to view.bmp"

Note the quotes are important. There MUST be two sets with the second set around the image name. The advantage of this is that it supports older MS graphic formats like MIX.

I will try what John Inzer suggested(Copied that portion)but I would have
used my MS-Picture IT 7.0....OPENED Projects..picked out a FRAME in Projects
that would contain TWO-jpg-images..perform a simple DRAG&DROP....Save
As.....and then OPEN in the FAX-viewer......there would be some miscellaneous
FRAME material...but a simple operation could be utilized...and use of a
Program is always good instruction.....but I will try that operation by John
Inzer.

In case XP folks still need this (I was looking for multiples of pix/fax viewer), if just multiple pix (pictures) in IE windows (I'm using IE8) will do (as I have used for years), that is easiest (for limited file types), as follows:

Right click (mouse) on a pix file you choose (jpg, png, gif, or ?) and select "Open With". In XP (at least with IE8) you should see "Internet Explorer" as a choice.

Click on that, and your pix file will open in a separate window (at least for certain file types; I don't know all, but jpg, gif, and png work fine).

You can do this as many times as you have memory for, apparently.

If using a machine with a touch pad you can probably zoom in and out with that (as usual; I'm using IE8), or use the appropro keyboard shortcut ("Ctrl+" or "ctrl -" in IE8).

Thanks to all contributors, and for leaving this stuff up!
