It may have lost it's uninstall information. Did you try reinstalling it
and then trying to uninstall it?
If you simply delete the program folder under C:\Program
Files all of the registry entries will remain. For
something like a printer, the install program may no
longer function (If you try to reinstall the program).
Restore a backup copy of the registry that existed before
you installed the errant program. (Actually, delete the
program manually so it no longer exists)
The OS will no longer see any programs that were
installed since that backup. If you have programs that
were installed since the backup copy, they will have to
be reinstalled. (Sometimes reinstalling is no problem.
The other choice is to uninstall programs that are known
to have been installed since the backup; before you
revert to the earlier version of the registry)
If most of your progams are functioning fine, but for
some reason (perhaps an upgrade patch was installed) the
OS is "suspicious" and unreliabile, reinstall WinXP on
top of itself. All of the installed base of programs will
still function, but now you know that the underlying OS
is consistent.
PC Magazine has a free utility, Registry robot, which
among other things, will locate the CD Key for your OEM.
If you use that key, rather than the one on the
Certificate of Authenticity, then you can bypass the
product activation (and be entitled to unlimited hardware
changes).
It takes about an hour for WinXP to reinstall. Probably,
about 4 hours total before the entire process is complete
