After many attempts with other newsgroup users to get my
home network correctly configured, I'm still in dire need
of assistance.
Current configuration:
A) Windows XP Home edition desktop connected to a Netgear
MR814 wireless hub/router via cable.
B) Windows 98 laptop, connected via wireless PCMCIA card.
C) DSL modem.
Problem:
1. Both machines can connect to the Internet--no problem.
2. The XP machine cannot see any computers on the home
network (including itself). The error I receive
is: "KBRJ HOUSEHOLD is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available". The laptop can see
the workgroup, but since the other PC can't connect, there
are obviously no files yet to share.
Attempted Solutions:
I have executed the following recommendations.
1) Uninstalled PrintShop, got rid of the PDF printer it
installed, and disabled the print spooler.
2) Ran " sfc /purgecache " and " sfc / scannow " programs.
3) Re-ran the Network Wizard. It ran to
completion successfully.
4) Folders are marked for sharing on the network.
5) I've tried disabling Norton Internet Security, to no
avail.
Current Status:
When I now explore My Computer on the XP machine, here's
what I see:
a) My Network Places ->
b) Entire Network ->
c) Microsoft Windows Network ->
d) Under Windows Network I can see my home workgroup
that I've created (KBRJ HOUSEHOLD).
e) When I click on the this Workgroup to presumably see
the computers on that particular workgroup, that's when I
get the above listed error.
It seems there is an obvious step missing someplace, but
I'm at a loss. Any help would be great appreciated.
Klaus

Thanks for the initial help. My response--
1. I have enabled file and printer sharing (the hand
symbol displays on the appropriate folder).
2. I'm not familiar with your point here: command net
view? Do you mean if I ping other pc's.
3. I'll try to disable simple file sharing and re-enable
(what is the best process for this?)
Much thanks-
Klaus

Here are the results I get upon executing your
suggestions below:
1. Net View. I receive the following error message at
the DOS prompt:
"System error 6118 has occurred. The list of servers
for this workgroup is not currently available.
2. Simple file sharing. I followed both the
instructions listed at the brinkster web site, as well as
the instructions under Windows XP help. The problem is
that the specific choice for unchecking Simple File
sharing on the Tools -> Options -> View tab does not
exist, no matter which way I get to that dialog.
The only place I can find anything about file sharing is
if I right click on a folder, at which point I can
designate the various sharing levels.
What's the next option?
Thanks-
Klaus

System error 6118 has occurred. The list of servers for this workgroup is
not currently available
SYMPTOMS: After enabling ICS/ICF, you can't see any computes on My Network
places. If you try, you may get "workgroup is not accessible". Also, if you
use the net view command, you may receive "System error 6118 has occurred.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." message.
Resolutions:
1) This behavior can occur if you enable the ICF that will closes the ports
for file sharing by default. To open these ports, right-click the network
connection that is firewall protected> Properties>Advanced>Settings>Service
Tab>Add, Enter 127.0.0.1) for the required Internet Protocol (IP) number.
Enter UDP ports from 135 through 139, and TCP ports from 135 through 139 one
by one (the external and internal port numbers should be identical).
2) This may occur if the workgroup name and the domain name are the
different.

It looks like Chris' problem was fixed (next message in
thread).
I still have questions, however. The fix prescribed below
addresses a computer which has been set up as an ICS
computer. This is not true in my case. I have a wireless
router/firewall, to which all PC's are connected.
Therefore, no need to activate my desktop as an ICS
computer.
That said, when I go to the specified dialog per the
instructions below, the only way to get into the Settings
is to activate (switch on) the firewall protection for the
computer. It is currently switched off. Are you
suggesting that I do in fact switch the firewall
protection on, go into the settings, and then add the
internet protocol settings per the below?
It seems this is a double negative fix.....?
Just wanted to be clear before I proceeded with this step.
Thanks-

1. Rebuild the machines, but do not, repeat, do not,
install any of Norton's AntiVirus or other products. For
that matter, hold off on any other maker's AntiVirus
products until you have your network setup.
2. Then setup your network.
3. Watch it work flawlessly.
Do a search on the web for problems with Norton AntiVirus
and file sharing and you'll see it's no fluke. Suggested
this to a friend, and it worked for him as well. Nothing
else works. Don't waste your time. You'll go slowly
insane.
