New to networking and useing XP help. Network has a desk
top with XP home, linked to D-LIN Ethernet router to a
LAPtop with a D-Link Ethernet card running 98 Windows.
Setting up ICS receive Error #799 - conflict of Host IP
with another client useing same IP address. Router is
useing same IP address. How to change Host or routers IP
address???

I am not sure I understand the problem. If you have a router, you don't need
to setup ICS. If you setup ICS, one NIC get public ip from ISP, and another
NIC will be assigned 192.168.0.1 automatically. For more information, go to
http://www25.brinkster.com/ChicagoTech >ICS setup.

My set is as follows; a dail up service plugs into the
host computer, the host computer is plugs into the
wireless router. A PC wireless card is in the laptop. I
enable my network and can share files between the two
computers. I have the host to go online while on LAN.
The lap top, still on the LAN & host connected to the
web, can not access the web. When I run the "the network
wizard" on the host, running XP, I receive the error
"...Error #799 - conflict of Host IP with another client
useing same IP address. Router is useing same IP
address. The Laptop is running Windows 98 and I have ran
the "the network wizard" on the lap top.

If your running ICS on the "host computer", ie. the one connected to your dial modem and your ISP, then you might try turning *OFF/Disable* the wireless routers DHCP server and NAT functionality. I do that with my ORiNOCO RG-1000 so it simply acts as a "bridge" between the wireless and wired networks. I use one of my XP Pro boxes as a ICS/ICF box to share my dialup ISP. Wireless clients, ie. my iPAQ 3835 PocketPC or an HP Omnibook Xe2 laptop, either get a DHCP assigned IP from the ICS box or use a static IP. The RG-1000 also uses a static IP on my home LAN.

Here is my LAN so you can see how this is physically setup...

Yes both host and router have IP of 192.168.0.1. Router
is set up to have this IP. Host is showing same IP
address. THX

that is the problem. you can't have two devices using the same ip. I would
setup the router as dhcp to assign ip to the host. Why do you call this
computer as host. Are you using ICS (I believe I asked this question but
haven't got answer)?

I have beeb working with D-Link, Gateway and several web
pages on networking support and my understanding was my
DeskTop unit was a host. In setting up the network I
labeled the DeskTop as my host. Totally confused by all
the input then found this site - which as been great.
I am trying to use ICS - ICS is "Internet Connection
Sharing" - right?
