Windows XP cannot see itself on home network

Despite a littany of attempts, my XP desktop still can't
see itself on a home network.

Question: The fix prescribed below addresses a computer
which has been set up as an ICS computer. This is not
true in my case. I have a wireless router/firewall, to
which all PC's are connected. Therefore, no need to
activate my desktop as an ICS computer.

That said, when I go to the specified dialog per the
instructions below, the only way to get into the Settings
is to activate (switch on) the firewall protection for the
computer. It is currently switched off. Is the
suggestion to in fact switch the firewall
protection on which would then allow me to go into the
settings, and then add the internet protocol settings per
the below? It seems this is for a different scenario than
what I've got.

Thanks-

issue. what OSs do you have in your network? try to stop computer browser on
this computer. post back with the result.

The PC with with the problem is a Windows XP home
edition. I installed it clean myself. All
patches/software updates are current for OS and Browser
(Internet Explorer). So you're suggesting the browser is
preventing this PC from even seeing itself on the
network? Remember, the internet connection is fine on
both machines.

The only other PC on the network is Windows 98 SE, which
can see itself, and connect to internet.

How do I stop the computer browser?

I means computer browser service. but you have told what are the OSs in your
network. to stop it, go to properties of my computer>manager>services.

Here is the result I get when I stopped the Computer
Browser under administrative services:

Although I can (still) see the workgroup name listed
under: My Network Places -> Entire Network -> Microsft
Windows Network -> [workgroup name appears here]

...when I click on the workgroup name I still get the
access error.

What next?

Thanks-

Here are the results of stopping the computer browser
service in the Administrative Services.

When I click on: My Network Places -> Entire Network ->
Microsoft Windows Network....I can see the KBRJ HOUSEHOLD
workgroup. But again, when I click on the workgroup to
see the available computers, I still get the access
error. Still can't even see the computer I'm working on
in the group. Nothing.

Next ideas?
Thanks-
