I'm using Win XP (Home Edition)/Win98 to connect 11~14 PCs. (11 - Win XP,
balance Win98)

All PCs with 10/100 NIC connecting thru 10/100 switch/Hub.

All connection tested good, ping from every PC indicated connection is good.
All WORKGROUP PCs can be view at NETWORK PLACE.

Very often, cannot accessing the remote pc, error message as follow:

"\\computer name is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions.
No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because
there are already as many connections as the computer can accept."

1. What causes the problem and what's the possible solutions ?
2. What's the limitation on number of PCs on peer-to-peer networking in Win
XP ? Can we increase the number of access?
3. Will install other protocol (IPX or NetBuii) help ?

Appreciate any clue/s or feedback.

Merry X'mas & Happy New Year.

Last I knew....XP Home and XP Pro accept on 10 connections at a time. Any
more than that and I believe you need to get Windows 2000 Server.

Home edition of XP supports 5 concurrent connections, while XP Pro supports
10. If you reach the max. concurrent connections then one of the requesting
computers will have to try again after another finishes doing whatever it
was doing.

There's no way to increase those limits. You would have to get W2K Server or
(XP Server when it's released) and buy additional licenses, and place your
shares on the server.

I believe they come in multiples of 5 (5, 10, 25) but they aren't cheap. If
you are up to it, Linux with Samba makes a good file sharing server at no
cost, but requires computer and OS specific skills to setup.

Do you really need to support more than 5 or 10 _concurrent connections_ to
each machine? Is this a small business envirnoment? Then Server would be
worth the investment.

Also note that the Home Edition XP machines can't join a domain, they can
still use domain resources but they must enter their username/password
thenmselves for the requests for those services. Otherwise, XP or 2K or WFW
or even W3.1 will work with the server versions.

Happy holidays...
