Subject: XP Corrupt User Profile
After receiving an error message " Windows cannot load
your profile because it may be corrupted" I created a new
user profile and copied the contents of the corrupted
profile to the new  profile ( as per KB article> 318011).
After  I logged onto the new user profile with the copied
information I received the original error message "
profile corrupted".
What now?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Matt

You may have copied the old version of 'ntuser.dat'. Try deleting that, and
restarting to let XP rebuild a new one.

I deleted ntuser.dat in the new user profile and
restarted and xp did build a new ntuser.dat.  The files
from the old user profile are transferred to the the new
user but none of the personalized settings appear ie
shortcuts etc. My settings for Outlook Express are not
there and programs still act as if it is the first time I
am logging on.
Suggestions?Thanks for all your help.
Matt

No, it looks like the info was lost in a corrupt ntuser.dat file.

Can I try deleting the ntuser.dat in the original damaged
profile, and transfer either without a ntuser.dat or
create a new one prior to transferring?

Also I dont think the info was lost because when I tried
an earlier copy I incorrectly was logged on as the user
receiving the files, the transfer was halted but I had
all of the shortcuts on my desktop from the corrupted
user.

Hi Matt,

Logon to another account with admin privilege and run System Restore.
Choose the most recent restore point and SR should restore the user
hives.

Or...

Boot into safe mode and log in as Administrator. Copy ntuser.dat from
%windir%\repair to "Documents and Settings\[your user id]". Now do a system
restore to a point in time prior to when the corruption message began to
appear.

Or...

Relocate NTUserdat

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and find the profile you want to change
and then change ProfileImagePath to the ntuser.dat folder that you want to
use. You must manually copy or move the ntuser.dat file there.
