search instead of open when dbl clicking on drive icons

If I double click a drive icon it opens a search window
instead on the drives contents. If I right click on the
drive icon the first item on the list is SEARCH as apposed
to OPEN. How can I switch OPEN to be the default setting?
I have tried folder options and restoring all defaults to
no success.
