I ran the upgrade from 2K - some older drivers were flagged
and replaced by XP with newer ones (some of which I rolled
back successfully) and I haven't had one crash or problem.
I also did a fresh install (on a different partition) just
for the hell of it and all went perfectly.
Give it another CHANCE Kieth!!!! (BTW - to which store can
you return opened software ??!!!??)

Either sub-standard/defective hardware, or sub-standard/defective

: Windows XP is a piece of SHIT! It's going right back to the store
:

"doesn't work the way it should"??
This is WINDOWS we're talking about here, not some
unreleased beta from a small company with limited
resources! This software is being installed on
hundreds of thousands (millions?) of machines as we
speak! Windows XP WILL work the way it should, as per
MS's guidelines. Oh sure there will be people out
there using ZippyDippy Inc.'s USB-FireWire SCSI video
IMAX-out DVD toast burner hardware that is guaranteed
XP compatible by the manufacturer, but if MS doesn't
logo it then it's going to cause headaches. May work,
may not.
Why an innocent retailer has to take the blame for
someone's impatience or lack of research with a
perfectly good defect-free product I don't know.
You're probably in the minority then. I've installed it just fine.
No hangups whatsoever -- at least, none related to the OS. The
drivers for my old 3Dfx card didn't work properly, and since 3Dfx
doesn't properly exist anymore, drivers weren't forthcoming. I
figured it was time to upgrade my card anyway, so I got a GeForce, and
now I'm quite happy. On install, XP recognized and installed drivers
for everything. It even found my network without a hitch. Moreover,
part of my day job is being, among other things, a partner reseller of
Microsoft products, so I deal with people and XP every day, and of the
over 100 people I've sold it to, not one has come back with a single
problem or complaint -- again, that was OS-related. (Some older
prebuilt HP systems have a problem with it due to an oddball, cheap
piece of hardware they stuck in their systems that has no XP drivers
for it -- and unfortunately HP's position is that they're just not
supporting XP with those machines. Still, that's HP's problem, not
mine or Microsoft's)

Umm.... Good yes. Defect free? I doubt it. They may have hidden them
better than they have in the past, but they are there. Give 'em time.
Something will show up. Probably a security fix or some other
networking fix.
Considering the task of making XP . . . MS engineers have got a lot of
talent. They are human though.
Your statement is totally wrong. There is lots of software that can be
returned, even opened. Go into a Software outlet sometime and read the
boxes. Many give you a 90 day window (no pun intended :)). Granted, the
return is usually through the manufacturer, not the retailer, but that still
doesn't make your statement correct.

Also just to add a little info, Software Ect. has a 14 day return policy on
open software.. You can return it for a full return...
