Windows XP is a piece of SHIT! It's going right back to the store tomorrow.
What a joke. Every Linux distribution I have ever installed goes smoothly,
recognizing everything. Then this "user friendly" monster from MS can't
install. I think MANY people will return this crap. MS, what were you
thinking?

Kieth, Kieth, Kieth ...

I ran the upgrade from 2K - some older drivers were flagged
and replaced by XP with newer ones (some of which I rolled
back successfully) and I haven't had one crash or problem.

I also did a fresh install (on a different partition) just
for the hell of it and all went perfectly.

Give it another CHANCE Kieth!!!! (BTW - to which store can
you return opened software ??!!!??)

Depends where you are, you can in the UK for example, both main retail
chains give a 16 days refund.

Personally, I don't care what the "policy" is. If software doesn't work the
way it should or at all, they are going to take it back! I get my way on
these things. PERIOD!

Either sub-standard/defective hardware, or sub-standard/defective

Oh! For the love of ...

"doesn't work the way it should"??
This is WINDOWS we're talking about here, not some
unreleased beta from a small company with limited
resources! This software is being installed on
hundreds of thousands (millions?) of machines as we
speak! Windows XP WILL work the way it should, as per
MS's guidelines. Oh sure there will be people out
there using ZippyDippy Inc.'s USB-FireWire SCSI video
IMAX-out DVD toast burner hardware that is guaranteed
XP compatible by the manufacturer, but if MS doesn't
logo it then it's going to cause headaches. May work,
may not.
Why an innocent retailer has to take the blame for
someone's impatience or lack of research with a
perfectly good defect-free product I don't know.

You're probably in the minority then. I've installed it just fine.
No hangups whatsoever -- at least, none related to the OS. The
drivers for my old 3Dfx card didn't work properly, and since 3Dfx
doesn't properly exist anymore, drivers weren't forthcoming. I
figured it was time to upgrade my card anyway, so I got a GeForce, and
now I'm quite happy. On install, XP recognized and installed drivers
for everything. It even found my network without a hitch. Moreover,
part of my day job is being, among other things, a partner reseller of
Microsoft products, so I deal with people and XP every day, and of the
over 100 people I've sold it to, not one has come back with a single
problem or complaint -- again, that was OS-related. (Some older
prebuilt HP systems have a problem with it due to an oddball, cheap
piece of hardware they stuck in their systems that has no XP drivers
for it -- and unfortunately HP's position is that they're just not
supporting XP with those machines. Still, that's HP's problem, not
mine or Microsoft's)

Umm.... Good yes. Defect free? I doubt it. They may have hidden them
better than they have in the past, but they are there. Give 'em time.
Something will show up. Probably a security fix or some other
networking fix.

Considering the task of making XP . . . MS engineers have got a lot of
talent. They are human though.

Oh sure, "over time" all systems show some form of
shortcoming. Everything from toilets to cyclotrons
are improved over the years. I code for a living and
my main job as far as I can tell is forseeing anything
and everything the end-user will do with the program
when run both stand-alone and networked. The actual
module coding is secondary. I'll spend 3-4 hours
sitting at my desk thinking about how a part of
the program will be used and then 1/2-1 hour doing
the actual coding of the part. When we run it by the
QA dept. I get very few bug reports back from them
because of the time I've spent in the planning phase.
This process is very cerebral and I'm sure alot of
programmers think to be a programmer you must WRITE
CODE, WRITE CODE, WRITE CODE ooohh-hhHHH-HHH-HHhh-oo...
Not so!
But anyway, by defect free I meant the physical
condidition of the product - no missing pages
from the docs, no scratches/cracks in the CD etc.
It's for these reasons a retailer must exchange
(not refund) a unit. Just because the software
doesn't appear to do what an individual thinks
it should do can not precipitate a return or
refund by the retailer.

Hello R:

Your statement is totally wrong. There is lots of software that can be
returned, even opened. Go into a Software outlet sometime and read the
boxes. Many give you a 90 day window (no pun intended :)). Granted, the
return is usually through the manufacturer, not the retailer, but that still
doesn't make your statement correct.

Yes, do that.
But we do not care, we like MX. It is fast, almost as fast as Linux. It is
user friendly and that is not Linux. We got lodas of programs to use and it
is easy to install a NvidaGeeForce2/MX GFX card.
But I do use Linux on my old machine from the time when I did go in school,
for linux got only one avandtage, it is free!

P.S Sorry for my bad spelling.
