If you have plugged in a device that requires removal, right
click on an empty area of the Taskbar. Then, click on
Properties. Is there a check in the "Hide inactive icons" box?
If so, you can either:
a) Uncheck the box or
b) Click on Customize - and configure the device list. Set
the "Safely Remove Hardware button" to "Always Show".
However, it is not unusual for icons to go missing from the
Notification area in Win XP. If the previous suggestions don't
resolve the problem, try the tweak at
www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (Line 53, left hand side).
