Hi Everyone,

I had some issues with malware and viruses and ran Norton Anti Virus, Super
Anti Spy and a program called Remove it, which someone suggested I use in
another newsgroup. I now think I have got ride of all my viruses and spyware,
however now when I restart my computer it freezes at the windows screen and
the blue status bar just keeps running and running. I can start the computer
in safe mode; hence this post, but I don’t know how to resolve the problem of
the computer freezing on start up.

I would be grateful for any help on this matter.

Thanks a million in advance.

Start in Safe Mode and go to start run to type: devmgmt.msc
Device Manager will let you use the Action menu to 'uninstall' your devices
and 'scan for hardware changes' This may repair the damage done by the
Malware.
Determining the device at fault can be tedious. I suggest using the Safe
Mode Menu item for making a bootlog. the '%windir%/ntbtlog.txt' will list
the last device to load, and rightclicking that file for its Properties can
tell you who made the driver, and therefore which one is failing during a
Normal boot.

Answered in another newsgroup. Please do not send the same message
separately to more than one newsgroup (called multiposting). Doing so
just fragments the thread, so someone who answers in one newsgroup
doesn't get to see answers from others in another newsgroup. And for
those who read all the newsgroups the message is multiposted to, they
see the message multiple times instead of once (they would see it only
once if you correctly crossposted instead). This wastes everyone's
time, and gets you poorer help than you should get.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please
do so by crossposting -- sending a single message simultaneously to
multiple newsgroups (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Please see "Multiposting vs Crossposting" at
http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm

Dear Mark,

Apologies for the multiply listing, I’m quite new to these news groups and
am still finding my way around. I have posted an apology on one of the other
sections of this site, but I am posting this reply only to you. I hope I’ve
got it right this time!

Thanks for the info in your reply. I carried out the instructions regarding
hardware etc and got a list of things on the computer .This is one of the
listed things “A8KCRRX9 IDE Controller” and had a yellow exclamation mark
beside it.

Also I appreciate your advice regarding creating a “BOOTLOG”, but my
knowledge is so thin I have no idea how to do this and or indeed what a boot
log is.

Once again thanks for your help in advance.

We have to sopt meeting like this!

One more time:

I'm pretty sure that it's that plagiarized app by PCbutts or whatever
he's calling himself these days. My understanding is that also alters
the Hosts file to prevent a person reaching reputable sites like
Bleeping Computer.

Does anyone know if that app produces any other undesireable effects? To
OP: it's important you delete your Hosts file. The location is:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

If you wish, you may replace it with a *good* Hosts file:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

But, yes, Gerry and Ken are correct; you still have malware (or at the
very least, you have damage that it has left in its wake). Many people
have had success running one or both of these programs in Safe Mode:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

SUPERAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

The freeware versions are fine.

If you still have malware, you will have to post a HijackThis log to an
appropriate forum (courtesy of David H. Lipman):

Finally, Belprice, in the event you choose to hang around in the
Microsoft newsgoups, note that using an actual news reader like Outlook

interface) is a much better experience. Also, it's always best to follow
"Netiquette."

A Yellow 'bang' mark is good news. Open devmgmt.msc again and highlight that
device, use the Action menu to 'uninstall' then use the action menu to 'scan
for hardware changes' Restart in Normal mode to test.

Excellent answer. I just wanted to add that MBAM works better in normal
Windows than it does in Safe Mode.
Of course, the OP cannot get into normal (if there really is such a thing)
Windows, so he doesn't have a choice initally.
If he gets it back into Normal Windows, he should then run MBAM again.

JC:
Assuming Mark's suggestion is a "no-go"...

There are a number of approaches you can take to resolve the problem you're
experiencing (assuming there's no hardware issue involved here)...

(We're assuming in all this that you've already tried the Last Known Good
Configuration option during the boot but that was also a no-go)

1. Since you're able to boot your system through Safe Mode, why don't you
try the sfc /scannow process to see if that helps. (You'll probably need
your XP OS installation CD handy after invoking that command). If you don't
know anything about the process, do a Google search.

2. Also, try the chkdsk /r process and see if that helps resolve the
problem.

3. Ultimately if the above (or other options) don't resolve the problem, a
Repair install may be in order. See the following for add'l info on this...
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RI
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=138
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

Just one final thing...
All the above options can result in a further corruption or even loss of
data. It's a rare event when they do (even if the process should fail to
correct your problem) but it *can* happen. So if there is any personal data
on your HDD that is absolutely crucial to you and you could not tolerate its
loss...make sure that you copy same to some removable media.

On my web page run my diagnostic tool called whatslivern. That file after a
few seconds, when complete, will generate a log file. That log file will be
saved in the same directory you ran the program from, using the email link
and the bottom of my page send me a copy of that log file.

Another clarification of the way newsgroups work: you can address your
message to anyone you want (as you did here), but the message is
sent to and is available to, *everyone* who participates in the
newsgroup. It's very common that others beside the person you
addressed it to will reply to your message (as I'm doing here).

Funny how other contributors to newsgroups are all idiots and you are

there are a variety of things
that can de stabilize windows
and may seem that there is
an infection at play.

for example, a service could
be enabled which should not
or a device is failing or mis
configured or whatever...

the causes for windows becoming
unstable are many and just
not due to infection(s).

if you found safe mode performing
well, then i would suggest the
clean boot method to normalize
normal mode.

the above is simply one attempt
to begin the process of eliminating
the cause of :

Computer Freezes on Windows Bootup

---------

in all fairness, if you were
actually infected and the
infection was removed, then
it would be highly likely that
you would have also needed
to repair your windows system
via your windows cd.

though i haven't examined
the latest contribution, i
have examined one of pc butts
contributions in the past and it
was a well written little utility.

therefore, i am confident that
pc butts places a great deal of
time and effort into creating his
utilities and then generously
provides them to others for
use for free.

further, the above is not
uncommon.

many people write great tools
to help overcome issues.

for example you can take a

but the two above are but a

you are also welcome to

unfortunatley this has made no difference , the computer is still freezes on
