1. Chaintech VNF4 Ultra motherboard
2. Seagate Barrracuda 7200.8 250gb SATA drive - Boot disk with XP SP2
already on it
3. Maxtor DiamondMax10 300gb SATA drive - New drive I'm trying to
install, no OS
After physically installing the new drive, the BIOS sees it fine.
After booting to XP and going to computer management, the new disk is
listed as Not Initialized. When I try to initialize it, it fails,
saying: "An unexpected error has occured. Check the System Event Log
for more information on this error. Close the Disk Management console,
then restart Disk Management or restart the computer." Event Viewer
has an error with eventid 2, source is "LDM", details are "Unspecified
error (80004005)". Googling that doesn't turn up much info.
Here's what I've done so far:
1. BIOS is up to date from manufacturer
2. Got latest NForce4 (motherboard) drivers directly from NVidia
3. XP is patched all the way, including SP2
4. Installed and tried running Maxtor software, to no avail.
5. Windows XP cd sees the Maxtor drive, but cannot access it in order
to format or make partitions
6. Partition Magic does not even see the Maxtor
Both drives are SATA, so I'm confident the SATA drivers are working.
I've tried using different SATA channels on the mobo, but that doesnt
make a difference.
Lots of documentation out there about XP 48-bit LBA support for large
drives, but it's supposedly fixed with SP1 and SP2. I went ahead and
made the regedit change just to be sure. No difference.
In short, my BIOS detects the hardware fine. At the OS level XP kinda
sees it, but can't do anything with it. Ideas?
