I believe that microsoft are pulling support for XP2.
To date I have resisted updating to XP3 due to reading adverse comments
after installation.
Are there any current issues or should I go and install it.

I can understand your reticence as I was the same, but about a year
ago, I took the plunge and nothing happened at all! Of course I can
only speak for myself, but remember that the people, like me, who had no
issues at all, tend not to mention it and the few (and they are I think)
complain in newsgroups. You'll always find somebody who gets problems
with anything computer-related, but very often they are people who
perhaps don't keep their systems in good condition and so on.

SS brought next idea :

You will be Ok, if you were not having
problems/glitches/slowness/infections beforehand, you will be fine.

Note: Support for WinXP SP2 ends today, Tuesday, 13 July 2010. After that
date, computers running WinXP SP2 "will no longer receive software updates
from Windows Update" (i.e., updates released on or after 27 July 2010) until
SP3 is installed.

I hope this is a dumb question, but will updates released after the 27th
install on a SP2 system if they're installed manually and not via Windows
Update?

I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority of computer that update from
SP2 to SP3 have no problems at all (98-99%). By all means backup your
computer before proceeding with the update. For most users it will be
uneventful.

Why would you hope it's a dumb question?

Only MS can answer that question since they do the coding for the updates.
