I have tried right clicking the file and associating it that way. I
find the floder I have the program in and select it, but nothing
happens.
The program works if I open it and then open the file from the
program.
Appreciate any help.
2?
I did not know anything below 6.4 would work on XP.
Actually - I assume there was a 2 - but... Where would you get that?!

Might be because the executable for 6.4 is "mplayer2.exe"?

Most Valuable Pig (MVP) won't know this!

Aha! Good catch throwitout.
I don't usually think of versions as being part of the executable name. I
utilize Media Player Classic a lot myself for playing my own captured
videos - it just seems to work with more things. It's filename is
mplayerc.exe most of the time. ;-)
Thanks for the correction!
firefox123,
Can you change the associations through the Windows Explorer --> Tools -->
Folder Options --> File Types method? Or at least check and see what the
extensions you are trying to associate are setup as now?
If you check the properties of the Win98SE mplayer.exe, the file
description is, Media Player 2. The file version is 4.10.

I don't have many Windows 98 SE PCs sitting around (zero in fact), ;-)
Thanks for the information though.

Reading is a skill.
If you read the post you were replying to you would have seen that
this was already stated and was being acknowledged in that post.

Got an email from the OP...

firefox123,
See above for my suggestion...
Also, you may want to try Media Player Classic (v6.4.9.0).... Spacebar works
in the same way as you are describing.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358
To be honest - I usually get it with the KLite Codec Pack... But this is
the source. ;-)
There is a BETA (v6.4.9.1), but reading the reviews - stick with the
v6.4.9.0 if you try it!

I was referring to the internal file description, Media Player 2,
of mplayer.exe, which is the original Win9x version that the
OP was referring to. Version 6.4 (mplayer2.exe) arrived later,
starting with WinMe. The OP has subsequently said that
his version was ancient. The original Media Player shipped
with the 3.x Windows series.
Is that right? I never had WinME (just Win98SE), and I sure have it
(mplayer2.exe). Its file date is Sept 2001.
So either it came with Win98SE, or IE6 (or IE6 SP1). (not just WinME).
Reading through this NG it's clear that it's YOU that doesn't read fully.
In future please do so.
It save other posters wasting their time.

The full stand alone version of Media Player 6.4 is still available
at the MS Download Centre, along with additional codecs and
buffer overrun security updates.
I did finally get it to work. I had to go into my current media
player (MediaPlayer 9.0) and deselect the file types. Then in the
Mplayer2.exe options I selected the media types. Finally I used the
open with option in windows Explorer and the Mplayer2 was available to
select with "Always use this program". It seems to have fixed the
problem.
Thanks the help.
