All of a sudden this morning my computers background changed to black and
displays the following message:

"WARNING! Spyware threat has been detected on your PC

Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity

Your IP address is #IP# and via this address an unauthorized access was
gained by another computer. It is strongly recommended to install an
anti-spyware software to close all security vulnerabilities."

I tried running ZoneAlarm and Ad-Aware but they would just lock up. I
rebooted into Safe-Mode and was able to run them. Ad-Aware Pro detected 29
items, I rebooted and still have the same message appear. Also, the computer
will not run any programs in normal mode, only in Safe Mode.

Any suggestions to eradicate this stuff or do I need to do a re-install of
XP Pro??

Thank you for your time

Mike

It's a worm. It's a scare tactic used to get you to download the worm. My
daughter had the same thing, except she ended up with the worm on her
computer. Downloading and running Spy Doctor from the Google Pack was the
only thing that fixed it even though she had other spyware software running
on her computer. You're probably okay now unless it actually was successful
in installing itself on you computer. If you think it was installed, search
for Google Pack on the internet and install and run Spyware Doctor. It's
pretty comprehensive - at least it took care of the worm on my daughter's
computer. Good luck.

One more thing, the computer will not access the internet at all.

You could run a bunch of anti spyware programs, anti virus programs,
check out the registry and still have a problem. The time it would take
to do this would probably be longer than reinstalling XP which *will*
solve it. I trust you have your data backed up.

Unfortunately, such messages are nearly always generated by the spyware
itself! You see, some anti-spyware companies act like the Mafia: trying
to force you into paying 'protection money' for their anti-spyware
software which half the time doesn't even work anyway!

Reformatting is one drastic way to solve the problem (i.e. moving
everything to a spare hard-drive and deleting the main hard drive and
reinstalling Windows) but it is a drastic one for many and should be
done if nothing else works (or if you fancy a fresh Windows install, I
recommend doing once a year or so) - your local, independant computer
shop will do this well for pretty cheap.

*_To_try_fix_yourself:_*
Spyware varies greatly so it is hard to give a quick definitive answer
on how to remove the one which has started plaguing your computer.
Buying an anti-spyware product often won't even solve the problem!

I find the best way to manualy remove Spyware is to first open the
Windows Task Manager (by pressing Alt+Ctrl+Delete) and selecting the
'Processes' tab. Then go through the list of processes and copy the
exact name of each process (listed under the 'Image NAme' column) into
either 'Windows XP file forum' (http://www.file.net) (an excellent
website for this!) or Google.

This should bring up a list of various websites which describe what
each process does ('www.neuber.com' & 'www.file.net' are especially good
websites).

Various websites should be listed describing what the process does and
if it is the spyware or not. A list of normal Windows processes which
don't require checking are:

svchost.exe
spoolsv.exe
taskmgr.exe
ctfmon.exe
lsass.exe
explorer.exe (but if in all capitals it IS spyware!)
smss.exe
System
System Idle Process

By looking at a couple of the pages listed in the search results you
should find advice and information on removing the particular spyware
that has infected your computer.

Hope this helps.
