Another one of our senior members has a problem that I don't know the answer
to, he writes

"Joe, I have several users set up on my computer. For the last few months
when I am logged in as Administrator, the User pane in Task Manager is
blank, whereas if I log in as another user it includes the usual details. It
is not causing any great problem, but I suspect that it indicates that
something is amiss. Have you ever come across this? I have looked up the MS
Knowledge Base and can't find a reference to it. I seem to recall that one
of the recent viruses affected Task Manager, but I can't find anything on
that".

Any assistance please with this one?

You need to have Terminal Services enabled and running in order to see any
names in the User Name column in Task Manager.

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Terminal Services |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Apply | Click the Start button | OK

From Task Manager Help:

User Name
[[The name of the user whose Terminal Services session owns the process. The
counter is available only when Terminal Services is installed.

Monitoring Sessions
The Users tab displays users who can access this computer, and session
status and names. Client Name specifies the name of the client computer
using the session, if applicable. Session provides a name for you to use to
perform such tasks as sending another user a message or connecting to
another user’s session.

The Users tab is displayed only if the computer you are working on has Fast
User Switching enabled, and is a member of a workgroup or is a standalone
computer. The Users tab is unavailable on computers that are members of a
network domain.

To view user activity
Click the Users tab.
Notes
The Users tab is displayed if you have enabled Fast User Switching.
Fast User Switching is available only if you are working on a computer that
is a member of a workgroup or is a standalone computer. Fast User Switching

Terminal Services
[[Allows remote login to the local computer. This service is required for
Fast User Switching, Remote Desktop Server and Remote Assistance. You will
not be able to view who is logged on to a particular computer by viewing the
"user" tab located in the Task Manager if this service is disabled. For
security reasons, disable this unless you specifically require its
functionality. For some reason, start this service to install Norton 2003.]]

G'day Wes,

Just got this from the member concerned:

Joe, thanks for your help but I'm afraid no success. Got as far as Set
Startup type to automatic | Apply | here is were it stopped as the Start
button under Service Status was ghosted out. Could not get any further.

Norm

Hi Joe,

The Users Tab appears when the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching is
applied. The Users appear when and if they are logged on.

Thanks very much Kelly, I have mine set up as the only user and I don't see
those things. I will forward your comments on to him and see if that makes
him smile.

Hello Kelly,

I just got this back from Norm:

Hi Joe.
Could you help to clarify what this all means, please? I do not use the
Welcome Screen. I use the system from Woody Leonhards book of going straight
into my site on switch-on. I don't know what Fast User Switching is. I
checked sfc /scannow and as the Windows File Protection pane exit without
saying anything I assume it's OK.
Regards Norm

I have explained FUS as best I can and also SFC but I don't have a clue on
the first part.

Many thanks

Kelly, you're a hero again, or is that heroine??

Got this from Norm:
Joe, with your help I've managed to get Task Manager back. I went to
Kellys-Korner and enabled it with a tweak down load. So all is fine. Thanks
a lot.
Regards Norm.

Many thanks for all the help

Is there a way to set task manager so that it shows network usage (particularly during downloads etc.) on the notification bar as an icon in manner similar to the way it shows cpu usage?

If not, do you know of a reliable downloadable little program that might do this?

<LOL> If so, that would be the latter. :o) Thanks for the update, Joe.

Would appreciate knowing which edit Norm used.
