I did see a tool from another post about quick launch, but the 'restore to
default' seems to be the only option that would fix it, and it's greyed-out
unless you pay $5. I suppose that's cheap enough, but there's something
about having to pay to fix a bug in XP that seems just wrong. If they
screwed something up and this is a common problem, then we shouldn't have to
buy something to fix it. TIA for any alternative repair ideas.
Gary
And if "they" didn't screw it up...?

I wasn't necessarily blaming anyone, could have been something our 2 year
old grandson did; it just seems that if the taskbar jumps from 0 to 2,3,4,5
etc. without any '1' width that there shouldn't be any way for a user to do
that. It's on a non-administrator account and she's never installed any
software, and it's only on that one account, so I figured whatever she did,
she shouldn't have been able to.
Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll see if the above fix works.
Gary
YW, Gary & understood. <eg>
You should be able to resize the task bar yourself (QuickLaunch taskbar is
another issue). First right-click on an empty area of the Taskbar and
choose Unlock. Then "grab" the little double-dotted line(s) in front of any
taskbar that's on the bottom level(s) and "drag" it up to the top one.
(Takes some practice.) Once you've got 'em all on the topmost level,
carefully "grab" the upper edge of the Taskbar (<—> appears) and "push" it
down so only one level is showing. Now 'Lock the taskbar'.

They didn't, this behavior is created by the user. That said, the restore
option is clickable via the main page. As per your issue, see if any of
this pertains:
This can happen by opening Accessibility Options, etc. If the icons on the
Quick Launch bar are showing as being larger, it will result in the taskbar
being twice its height and also include the date or similar under the clock.
If this is the case, right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance/
Advanced. Under the Item drop box choose Caption Buttons and change the
number by one, ok your way out, then rest to 25.
And/or reset your default to the XP Theme.
Other options to consider if the above doesn't help, nor moving the glider
over toward the Start Button to list only three icons in the Quick Launch
bar:
Restore the Taskbar to Default Functionality (Line 164)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

One possibility is that the faint hatched 'handle' that should be just
right of the Quick Launch icons has got dragged too far and jumped down
to the lower level. Take a look under the right edge of the Start
button, and if it is there, drag it up and right to just beyond those
icons, and things should snap back
