Every minute my PC freezes up for a second, and processor usuage jumps
to 30-40%. I'm trying to figure out whats causing this but the task
manager only shows the usuage, not whats actually using the processor
for that brief moment.

below is a screenshot taken while the PC was completely idle

How can i find out whats causing the spikes?

Messenger Plus! is known to come with the lop.com spyware. See this
Google search for more information about it:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Messenger+Plus%21+spyware%3F&btnG=Search

I would scan for malware by going through these steps systematically,
making sure to do the preparatory work:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

You might also want to stop the Ulead program from running and see if
that makes a difference.

If the machine is clean, do clean-boot troubleshooting:

Scan your system with latest virus definitioned anti virus as well as
with latest versions of spybot, search and destroy, cwshredder and
adaware.Run all of them in safe mode.

Look at the Event Viewer.
Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer>Application

Here you look for the event which is causing the problem.

Another thing you can do:-

I had Patchou jump me on this one.. the newer versions of Messenger Plus can
be loaded without the spyware stuff.. unfortunately, many just click OK
without first looking to see if there is any optional stuff that they can
prevent from being installed..

Thanks, Mike. Patchou and his minions can jump all they want. I followed
the whole contretemps between him and Sandi H. I stand by what I - and
Sandi - said.

Even if the OP didn't install the spyware affiliate stuff, he's got it
in his startup so troubleshooting by getting to a base system (clean
boot) is valid.

Just out of curiosity ... how did you get 3 Media Player processes running
at the same time?
I have Media Player and I can only get one up, no matter how many times I
try to start another?

I think it was to do with me removing WMP11. But i honestly couldnt say
for sure.

I didnt install the MSN Plus crap. This is an almost brand new PC
(couple of weeks), so im running a tight ship to make sure it runs
perfect. I'll disable the MSN Plus and see how it runs. Same goes for
the other processes you mention.

Thanks for the help. will give you an update shortly.

I've killed as many processes as possible and its still happening.
Nothing in the Event viewer to help either.

I had a sneaking suspicion before that it could be a hardware problem.
My wireless card. I'll take it out and see what happens.

Is there any way i can find out what process is causing that spike in
processor usuage though?

You may try Process Explorer:-

Process Explorer seems to think "DCPs" are peaking CPU usage.

DCPs mean anything to anyone?
