I just did a clean install of Windows XP pro and was going to change my user
password when I nioticed another user set up on my machine called "ASP.Net
Machine..." password protected with limited access.

Anyone know what this user is all about?

Here's what I posted on another thread titled "Logon to Windows". I really
think these problems are linked, please tell me if any of you are seeing
this too (read from the bottom up in between the lines of ****):

***********************what i posted on "logon to windows"
thread*****************************
You got it!! This is the right answer. I have two questions for you:
1) Any idea how to change back the log-off screen to the way XP HE ususally
does it?
2) Any idea how to get a shortcut (say in control panels) for the "control
userpasswords2"?

For the rest of you, here's whats going on. This problem has arisen on us
XP HE PCs that have foolishly kept up with Windows Updates. I suspect that
it is the newest update, .NET Framework 1.1, that is causing this to happen.
After you do this update, upon rebooting whenever you do so next, you'll
come to a prompt for a password. You may also get the welcome screen, even
if you never had it before. You'll also notice that trying to shutdown or
restart will give you the WinNT/W2K version of a "log off" prompt instead of
the XP HE Screen that had buttons for "standby, restart, shutdown". By the
way, you'll also get a new yet inaccessible "ASP.NET Machine A..." user
account on your system too (you may not see it unless you go to the User
control panel).

To any Microsoft people: PLEASE respond to this and confirm that it was the
.NET Framework 1.1 that is doing this. Also, PLEASE make a Knowledge Base
article...right now you have nothing discussing this.

Thanks, and please let's have lots of replies to this issue to get
microsoft's attention.

Hi,

Start/run control userpasswords2

Uncehck the line to require a user name and password. Click apply/ok and
follow the prompts to setup a default logon.

Hi Al,

It is from installing .Net. Common behavior and is needed/used for ASP.Net.
If you don't plan on using Visual Studio.Net (etc.), it can only be deleted,
not disabled. However, it is harmless. The only 'users' it bothers are
those who auto logon.

Hi Derek,

Calm down, MS is fully aware of this. This happens because it installs a
user. A user is needed for a specific reason. If you aren't going to be
using the functions, delete the user.

The only people bothered by this are those who auto-logon and it can be
easily corrected.
